Enrico Caruso (/k??ru?zo?/,[1] also US: /k??ru?so?/,[2][3][4] Italian: [en?ri?ko ka?ru?zo]; 25 February 1873 – 2 August 1921) was an Italian operatic tenor. He sang to great acclaim at the major opera houses of Europe and the Americas, appearing in a wide variety of roles (74) from the Italian and French repertoires that ranged from the lyric to the dramatic. One of the first major singing talents to be commercially recorded, Caruso made approximately 260 commercially released recordings from 1902 to 1920, which made him an international popular entertainment star.
"Vesti la giubba" ([?v?s.ti la ?d?ub.ba], "Put on the costume", often referred to as "On With the Motley", from the original 1893 translation by Frederic Edward Weatherly) is a famous tenor aria from Ruggero Leoncavallo's 1892 opera Pagliacci. "Vesti la giubba" is sung at the conclusion of the first act, when Canio discovers his wife's infidelity, but must nevertheless prepare for his performance as Pagliaccio the clown because "the show must go on".
The aria is often regarded as one of the most moving in the operatic repertoire of the time. The pain of Canio is portrayed in the aria and exemplifies the entire notion of the "tragic clown": smiling on the outside but crying on the inside. This is still displayed today, as the clown motif often features the painted-on tear running down the cheek of the performer.
Enrico Caruso's recordings of the aria, from 1902, 1904 and 1907, were among the top selling records of the 78-rpm era and reached over a million sales.[1][2]
This aria is often used in popular culture, and has been featured in many renditions, mentions, and spoofs.

***CAVEAT FOR PURCHASERS OF 78 RPM RECORDS FROM BARRY'S BARGAIN BIN*** The 78 rpm records offered here have accumulated from older relatives of mine. I am not familiar with most of the recordings and the information offered has been culled from my research on the internet (and may have factual discrepancies). For those who are not recording cognoscenti (including myself), be aware of certain details: (1) These records are very old--always FIFTY to ONE HUNDRED years or more; (2) As such, the recording quality is never more than acceptable--especially in comparison to Hi-Fi, Stereo, and Digital recordings. These are always noisy, with clicks, pops, scratches, etc.; (3) I have not played these records before offering them for sale. They are offered as COLLECTIBLE items. (4) Hence, NO RETURNS WILL BE ACCEPTED--FOR ANY REASON! I have been informed that major shipping companies--UPS, FEDEX, et al.--are prepared to handle these items and guarantee success in delivering them. The approximate cost to ship one record in the US is $25 (with minor variations concernings zip codes). That $25 is built into my price and will cover all domestic shipping and handling costs--including insurance and tracking.
