"Friends" is the fitting and revealing title for the tenth album since 1997 by New York blues musician Eric Bibb. Original folk and blues of different 'friends' in varying compositions in small groups is the motto of this album. Right at the beginning there is an unbeatable duet on the acoustic slide guitar by Bibb and Guy Davis, a real gold piece with the name "99 1/2 Won't Do". The contrast between Davis' equally lovely and smoky playing and Bibb's plaintive, hoarse singing - at times like Blind Willie Johnson - is convincing due to the multi-layered dimension of the interpretation. Elsewhere, e.g. in "Six O'Clock Blues", Charlie Musselwhite's snake-like runs on the harmonica come to the fore. Taj Mahal has two appearances: one in the duet "Goin 'Down Slow", the other in a trio with Bibb and the guitarist Djelimady Tounkara from Mali in a medley of the traditional "Kulanjan" and Bibb's own "Sebastian's Tune". After Mali and Mahal have been mentioned, Bibb will also play a variant of the classic "Lovin 'in My Baby's Eyes" with the first-class kora player Mamadou Diabate, which is valued by blues musicians, and which competes with the original. There's also a great version of Guy and Susanna Clark's "The Cape" with guitarist Martin Simpson, Bibb's moving "For You" with Ruthie Foster, and "Tain't No Such Thing," an excellent new folk song written and sung by with the legendary folk singer Odetta. Harry Manx, the hallmark of Mohan Veena, plays the monotonous, loneliness-conveying blues "Needed Time" with Bibb and "If I Stayed" with Kristina Olsen. The finale is the gentle "Dance Me To The End Of Love" (the original, not the Leonard Cohen song) with Lovin 'Spoonful's Jerry Yester on the piano. Assuming that most of these records resemble a grab bag at best, with a few 'highly decorated' contributors who serve to either spice up or dilute the interpretation of the individual pieces, then "Friends" is an outlier. Nothing is obvious or pompous here, everything is subtly shaded, the performers serve the songs and not themselves. The listener has neither the feeling of patting on the back nor self-adulation, only the great pleasure of being able to hear this music undisguised, with honest feelings. Bravo.
