Description
Up for auction is Blue Note 4163, Eric Dolphy's “Out to Lunch!”, featuring Dolphy on alto sax, flute & bass clarinet, Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Bobby Hutcherson on vibes, Richard Davis on bass, and Anthony Williams on drums. Track listing is as follows: Side One: 1) Hat and Beard; 2) Something Sweet, Something Tender; 3) Gazzelloni - Side Two: 1) Out to Lunch; 2) Straight Up and Down
Recorded and released in 1964, Out to Lunch! was Eric Dolphy’s only album for Blue Note under his own name; he died from diabetic shock in Berlin in June of that year. Out to Lunch! is generally highly regarded as one of the ground-breaking avant-garde/free jazz albums of the 1960s (and is a personal favorite of mine).
As with all of my listings, this is from the collection of a former radio DJ from NY in the 50s and 60s. They're all the real deal. An acquisition date of October 1, 1964 is written in blue pen on the back of the jacket above the personnel listing.
SLEEVE: EX-, with great color, gloss, and overall condition, but a slight warp in the bottom edge near the opening. No seam splits, no ringwear, no water damage.
RECORD: NM, with practically no spindle wear on either side, and some extremely faint scuffs on the first track of side 1. No needle trails, no major scuffs, in amazing condition, deep groove on side 1 only. Comes with ”25 years of Blue Note” original inner sleeve (see pic 3) that shows pictures of other albums in the Blue Note catalogue.
I am a university professor of music here in the US who inherited this and other records (Blue Note, Norgran, Impulse!, Columbia, Prestige, Fantasy, Riverside, etc.) from a collector and former radio DJ a few years back. I am looking to sell off some of these records to collectors/audiophiles who can get more enjoyment out of them than I can.
Thanks for looking.
