This is a record of all the songs of Eric von Schmidt's book Come For To Sing (Houghton Mifflin Boston 1963).  Von Schmidt was a friend of Bob Dylan back in his early folk days and taught him several songs.  Jack Elliott mastered the songs and style of Woody Guthrie and was a huge influence on Bob Dylan. He went on to become Ramblin' Jack Elliott, and ended up touring with Dylan as part of the Rolling Thunder Revue in the mid-70s (I myself saw him live a few years back in Big Sur, and he is still goin' strong!!).  Carolyn Hester was one of the early members of the 60s east coast folk scene, and "in 1961, Hester met an unknown, 19-year-old newcomer named Bob Dylan, who had an engaging harmonica style, and Hester invited him to play on her third Columbia album. Her producer, John H. Hammond, quickly signed Dylan to the label."  Jackie Washington was part of the Cambridge/Boston folk music scene in the early and mid-1960s, and released four albums on Vanguard.  His version of the traditional English nonsense song "Nottamun Town" was the tune and arrangement used by Bob Dylan as the basis for "Masters of War." Rolf Cahn was part of the Cambridge and Berkeley folk scenes, and released LPs on the Folkways label.

Essentially what you have here is some of the best and brightest of the 60s folk revival in it's infancy, with a whole album of songs that have not been rereleased in any form (as far as I can tell).  Highlights include the gorgeous version of "The Virgin Mary" by Carolyn Hester, the spare (voice only) "Night Herding Song" by Jack Elliott, and "Haul on the Bowline," which featues Elliott on main vocal and a shouted chorus presumably by the rest of the album's players (a few of the songs have vocal and/or guitar accompaniment from one of the other players).  A rare find!

I have listened to this LP all the way through, and there is minor surface noise throughout (no skips or major clicking/popping).  The vinyl looks VG+, due to a couple very minor scuffs that do not affect the sound.  Maybe a good cleaning on a VPI machine could restore this to a NM sound.  The cover is in shrinkwrap and is in beautiful condition, no ringwear, no splitting, just a little bending at the top right corner.  There is a name written on the shrinkwrap on the back in blue marker.  VG++ or NM-.  Either way, pics and description tell you what you need to know, please write to me if you need more info.

In short, a classic, lighthearted and hard to find folk revival LP.  Enjoy!
