Description
Extremely rare test acetate pressings of the 1982 Ultravox album Quartet - two discs (one for the A & B sides of the album). The album was produced by the legendary Beatles producer Sir George Martin.
It's likely that only a couple of these discs would have been made at the final mastering stage, prior to the actual vinyl albums being manufactured. One would have been sent off to produce the final vinyl pressings and these ones, it seems, were retained by Midge Ure. The discs were cut at PRT STUDIOS on 14th September 1982, a month before the Quartet album was actually released on 15th October 1982.
These were from Midge Ure's own collection and kept in storage for a number of years, so there is some discolouration of the outer sleeves, but both discs are in good order with only some surface scratches no skips or jumps. There is some surface noise, most noticible on Reap The Wild Wind and on the quiet parts of Hymn & Visions In Blue, but overall the sound is crisp and sharp.
I'm guessing, if you want these, you are buying them for a slice of history, something unique that was owned by Midge and used as part of the final production of the album and as such, they are a must for serious collectors.
I've had them for the last 12 year and bought them from the guys that run the Ultravox website, after Midge had donated them to help raise funds for site updates.

FOR INFO: Acetates are used for quality control prior to the production of the stampers, from which retail copies of the record will be pressed. The purpose of the test acetate(s) (called, 'reference disks') in the mastering process is to allow the artist, producer, engineer, and other interested parties to check the quality of the tape-to-disc recording process and make any necessary changes to ensure that the audio fidelity of the master disc will be as close as possible to that of the original master tape.
