Label Conditions: Both clean, fresh and attractive with fine spindle marks on the lighter side of moderate. A small ‘co’ is written above the hole on side one as seen. The record plays very impressively.

Warps: Few vintage records are ever perfectly ‘flat’, so some slight or very gentle arm movement is normal. If any record I offer has more than that, I will mention it, and it can be assumed all I offer should track without issues, even on budget turntables.

Brief Info: The third Faces album and their biggest seller of arguably their finest set. With the charismatic vocalist Rod Stewart on most lead vocals, this proved popular. Original copies included a huge poster (included), this included pictures of pills and groupies. This was soon to be withdrawn for this reason making first issues with the poster elusive and collectable. This a very fine copy, the highly wear-prone dark cover is impressive with little as-seen. The poster still impressive and possibly unmounted, and the record plays superbly throughout. A complete original that is now becoming increasingly scarce.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): arguably better, this is usually seen in very worn condition and blighted by ugly ring wear which this has avoided. A single unlaminated format with matt, smooth surfaces. The first ones have the spine ends deeply pinched as seen in close up. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press Ltd and includes the poster credit text. The plain white inner sleeve is included also, as well as the giant poster.

Cover Front & Back: The term ‘wear-prone’ hardly covers this one, the deep brown surfaces seldom avoid heavy rubbing and ring wear, both sides of this one has barely even a trace of rim impression, let along ring wear. Most of any rubbing on either side confined to the corner tips that few can hope to avoid totally, and there are minimal traces of any creasing. Both surfaces clean, fresh and attractive with no sticker issues, another peril this dark cover faced. A very impressive example and seldom seen as such.

Top Edge: Straight with barely any rubbing up to the right end tip area that does have a rub.

Bottom Edge: Virtually the same, but the tip rub even smaller.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, generally quite sharp with any thickening light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression, the ends deeply pinched as seen in close-up. All text is perfect and unworn with the surface and folds hardly rubbed at all, again as-seen.

Corners: The odd small tip crease and a moderate rub on the top right, the lower one opposite only very small. The spine pair with little. Very fine to excellent shape retained with no heavy knocks.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this unforgiving early 1970’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors given how difficult they are to fine as such.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: an unlined white inner with ‘patent no. 1,125,555,’ text credit. Two crisp undamaged window circles, minimal creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs. The paper only very gently darkened to politely remind of age.

The Poster: EXCELLENT: a huge poster printed one side, the back side is white with any tone spots very few and small. The corners have no pin-holes or tape marks, so possibly unmounted. The printed side has a gentle surface sheen and remains clean and still generally fresh. The odd fold nick split only – being so large, there will be stress on these over time – this is actually quite a heavy poster. I have taken the picture of it near the main cover to give scale to its impressive side. So no major damage at all and still attractive as my picture shows and still mostly intact – most often when found, in tatters with major tears, pieces missing or crudely repaired. This poster has become collectable and scarce as it was withdrawn due to the groupie and pills pictures included in the collage.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): a very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and very solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface traces few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, barely anything even registers. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality album plays even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few available copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played modestly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. The spindle marks on the labels may indicate a few plays, but if so, certainly with due care on a quality turntable. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
