Label/Format: Warner Bros – Custom format on side one and original traditional green format on side two.

Label Conditions: Both clean and fresh looking, side one (seen on scan) had a little crinkle on the rim near thje 10-11 o’clock position, this in manufacture, also a tiny pull near it. Spindle marks are only quite few, light and show little.

Cat Number: K 56011.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Weight of this Record: 144 grams. This above average and this is a very solid record.

Country of Manufacture: RECORD: UK – COVER: USA – POSTER: UK. I am sure all these covers were manufactured in the United States. Clearly it was a specialised format and the one factory made them. More details on this further down.

Rarity: Quite scarce, especially when including an unmounted poster insert. With this copy I have included a rare 1973 ‘Faces on Tour’ concert program that promoted this particular album. This will seldom be seen or offered and is a major bonus for any Rod Stewart and Faces fan and collector.

Brief Artist & Album Info: One of the great early 70s British rock bands featuring Rod Stewart, Ian McLagan, Ronnie Lane, Ron Wood and Ken Jones. Formed from the remnants of the Small Faces and proving very popular, this was their fourth album. By this time Stewart’s solo career was thriving and the Faces almost became his backing band for his albums too. Issued with it’s famous ‘Moving Face’ cover with moveable eyes and mouth parts, this is often seen damaged or torn. This had a little mildish ageing but hte moving parts are all perfect, undamaged and work (as seen on my picture). A great, somewhat sleazy gatefold inner too – American made, I feel certainly they are were – it’s a fine example, a little ageing and minor discolour, odd tone spot but few avoid it totally. The inclusion of the large lyric poster is always a bonus, so many are seen with it missing. The heavy-press record plays great with little at all unwanted. The original owner kept the relevant tour program inside the cover and a real nice extra for the winning bidder.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: unlaminated with a complex internal construction with moveable eye and mouth parts that will work perfectly. Simply rest the bottom of the cover in your midriff and tilt the top of the cover towards you and the parts will move. Working is easy and poses no risk to cover. A gatefold format, printed in the US. There are also two die-cut small holes that infer this cover was made to be hung like a picture, both are neat and perfect too.

Cover Front: A little discolour to the white area, mild toning or gentle grubbiness, just enough to remind of it’s considerable age – now 40 years old – this has always been a difficult cover in many respects. Barely any creasing the die-cut eye slots pristine. As are the complex shaped mouth part too – this works perfectly and is one of the great gimmick covers ever made.

Cover Back: The back also has a little discolour/mild grubbiness on the white perimeters but not a great deal else.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Classic sleaze - check out the boys’ eye direction - and looking impressive, just a little burring on the right (top) edge. Crease-free, very clean and attractive.

Top Edges: Some rubbing and patchy mild toning, being a white cover, the rubbing registers little.

Bottom Edges: Little wear, any thickening quite light, being the storage edges few will escape none.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with very little wear. Record entered on right outside edge. The lack of feathering or thickening to these fine edges is unusual, but most welcome.

Spine and Text: Similar to the right side but this has a traditional type spine sandwiched between the layers. Solid, straight, uncompressed and square, all text is perfect and unworn, any thickening very light.

Corners: All corners are neat and still quite sharp, any rubbing again registers little as they are all white.

Cover Summary: Classic gimmick ‘Moving Face’ cover, one of the most famous of it’s type. This is a fine, attractive example, naturally aged a little yes, few are seen pure white these days. It should please many collectors but not the perfectionists. The unlined inner sleeve is in very fine condition with no splits, two super crisp window circles and barely any creasing. A little minor discolouration here and there.

The Lyric Poster: EXCELLENT(++): unmounted (e.g. no pin holes, tape marks etc) and looking almost as clean and fresh as manufacture day. Clean, white and unmarked, all the foldlines are solid and unstressed and just one quite light corner crease and minimal crinkle. All edges very sharp and no toning marks to either side. This elusive insert will not prove too easy to find much better.

The ‘Ooh La La Tour’ Program: EXCELLENT: a 16-page A4 size booklet with plenty of colour inside of the band members. This has little to fault, the original two staples holds it together solidly, both untarnished or loosened. A little corner creasing to the back cover but little else. A rare 1973 tour program to promote this album, they will be rarely seen or offered.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT: with any surface marks very light and faint as seen under angled light. Just one more visible surface mark on ‘Borstal Boys’ that has no sound, it is only small. A fine visual copy that is clean, shiny, intense black and quite heavily pressed. A copy with modest plays on all the evidence and still offering very clean and enjoyable sound. It should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality heavy-pressed Warner record plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is high with a wide and deep dynamic range and detailed sound. No pops, noteworthy surface sounds or significant clicks were noted, few copies will play a great deal better. A copy clearly lightly modestly and nothing really spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this popular album. This copy will could prove quite difficult to find significantly better and is a very fine all-round package that merits high recommendation.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
