The quintessential British folk-rock album from a woefully underrated rock band. The late, great Sandy Denny never got her due as a rock diva, perhaps because she was never quite as pretentious as Stevie Nicks or over-the-top as Janis Joplin. But her voice is beautiful and distinctive (and if you are just getting into Fairport but find her voice eerily familiar, it's probably because you remember her duet with Robert Plant on Led Zeppelin's 'The Battle of Evermore' on the Volume IV/ZoSo album). 'Liege and Lief' is basically an electrified bit of traditional folk heaven, with many of the songs dating from the 16th through the 18th centuries, with original compositions by guitarist extraordinaire Richard Thompson, bassist Ashley Hutchings, fiddler Dave Swarbick and Denny sounding in much the same vein as the traditional tunes; in fact, so well does the original material match the traditional, it can be quite hard to differentiate the two, which is a testament to the group's songwriting skills.

Songs of particular interest are 'Reynardine' (an eerie song about a were-fox that draws a young woman to her doom), 'Farewell, Farewell' (a Thompson composition sung with appropriate melancholy by Denny) and 'Tam Lin' (another traditional tune which Fairport breathes life into). And the highlights are the violin-inflected jams on 'Matty Groves' (an old-style hack 'n' slash song of adultery) and 'Medley' (jig anyone?).

For their fourth album, Fairport Convention released what is regarded by many as not only the best record in their history but also one of the seminal English folk-rock albums of all time. This was also the album that marked the transformation of the group from, essentially, a rock band that utilized folk music (in tandem with modern singer/songwriter material) as a source for part of their sound, and an inspiration for their own songwriting, into a group specializing in reinterpreting traditional English songs. There's only one original number here, the soaring "Come All Ye," the rest being adaptations of old English folk songs; at the time, however, very few groups were doing this with any success, or mixing acoustic and electric sounds quite as adeptly, with the result that Liege and Lief was practically a consciousness-raising album for a lot of listeners. "Farewell Farewell," "Matty Groves," "Reynardine," and "Tam-Lin" were highlights of an LP filled with gems in this style, ornamented with gorgeous harmonies and striking instrumental virtuosity. Sadly, this lineup was in the process of splitting up virtually as the record was being made — after Sandy Denny's and Ashley Hutchings' exits, it would be remembered with a tone of nostalgia that was somewhat unfair to the equally impressive lineup that followed.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS NEAR MINT. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(c)             The record is pressed on a RELATIVELY  thick, inflexible vinyl. This is NOT a thin, flimsy ('dynaflex' type),  vinyl, but not the thickest, most rigid vinyl, either.

(d)            Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a filing code sticker affixed to the spine with a 2-inch piece of clear scotch tape, visible on both side)

-        Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine

-        Back cover has a small, rectangular, sticker residue (small yellowish discoloration from the removed price sticker)

-        Back cover has a few tiny, spot-like peel-off marks (less than 1/16th square inch in size, total)

-         Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 1.

-         Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.

-         Minor shelf wear noted on the seams (nothing significant)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No split seams

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)

-        No writing

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
