Label/Format: Liberty – Original blue format with matt finish and very gentle traces of texturing.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and highly attractive with only three or four light spindle marks on side one, side two has hardly any at all. A difficult and elusive album, late in the blue format, this record will prove very difficult to find better.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 138 grams. A very solid weight.

Rarity: The actual title itself is scarce but on the original Liberty blue label quite rare. The Liberty label format changed from the ‘blue’ design to the black design in 1970 and any Liberty album from that year with the original blue labels are far harder to find and some indeed are very rare like Hawkwind’s debut.

Brief Artist & Album Info: This was the second Famous Jug Band album proving to be the last, this first issue in very fine all-round condition. Formed by ex-original Incredible String band member, Clive Palmer, he had now departed before this second album was made. Quality original folk-type material is included and Jill sings - and how, this small lady has a fantastic strong voice. Henry is the large bearded guy on the right, he plays the jug, and these deep bass tones give this fabulous album it’s lovely distinctive sound. I can hardly recommend this one highly enough, not just one for folk connoisseurs, most music lovers should really love this one. My first copy since 2008 and not easily found.

Cover Grade and Format: EXECELLENT: or very close to. A single unlaminated format with a predominately black and dark finish. Not only that, this is made from very soft and beautifully textured card that never wears well. Most are rife with ringwear, rubbing and some even torn and tatty – all common factors on a cover like this. This delicate but beautiful cover was printed and made in England by James Upton & Co.

Cover Front: I have not too many of these, but most-all that I have, have been very badly worn with deep penetrating ringwear and rubbing. This front put into context is superb and has little to fault. A couple of very fine and light surface creases show little. But the lack of rubbing and ringwear are massive pluses, the colour dark and unfaded and very little aged at all. Not a cover to be held in one hand as this is flimsy and easily bends. The texturing is subtle and complex, seen more under angled light, the lack of speckle to the raised areas more good news, as is the lack of sticker marks or tears. This lovely front will take a lot of beating and looks lovely.

Cover Back: The back is largely the same, if anything – against all odds – even better. This has very little to fault at all.

Top Edge: Very thin, but still straight. It appears little worn but the odd tiny tip-in on the black surface is likely (but discrete here).

Bottom Edge: Looking very neat and again straight, but the owner has tipped-in on this fragile storage edge. It is neatly done and fairly inconspicuous, but there nonetheless. The more fussy and discerning owners were more likely to do this simply because they wanted their collection to look at its best.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mainly very sharp with little wear. Viewed end-on, the odd small burr or thickening trace that few will ever hope to avoid – and this guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: A highly delicate spine that remains solid, quite straight but has a little compression in places as most of these soft card covers will have. The ends have nipped manufactured tapering and again have evidence of enhancement – again very neat. The text near fully present and sharp with just the odd gentle trace of rub clipping. But again, many of these will be badly rubbed with text eroded which this has almost avoided as seen in my spine close-up.

Corners: All corners retain fine to very fine shape, but yes, neatly enhanced. The lack of dinks or knocks more than compensate on a fragile cover such as this.

Cover Summary: This is a real nice looking example, the previous owners tip-ins to some edge areas and corner tips is well done and it certainly can be argued better than white patches on black card. That purely subjective and I simply cannot refuse to offer such a lovely rare item because of this. When placed inside my mandatory new protective outer sleeve, this cover will (and does) look superb. The record is equally impressive and the sound fantastic. So not for the perfectionists, but most collectors will appreciate it’s still long retained beauty.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): and arguably better, only marked down a fraction for gentle darkening with age. In terms of real wear, barely any, this Polydor style polylined inner is superb. Both window circles are immaculate and the lining ultra clear and looking as made. Barely any creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs. This one correctly date-coded 0370.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT to EXCELLENT(+): with only the odd small surface mark or two that have NO sound. With close scrutiny under bright angled light, ultra fine and faint whispy traces are seen (just), this almost certainly from dry-cloth cleaning and totally harmless. Still a very impressive visual copy that is clean with very fine shine and solidly pressed on quality vinyl. I doubt if this has seen light-of-day for decades, and one has avoided any inner bag surface dulling that is so common from Polydor lined inners at this time. I am certain this has been played little and audio quality is very close to top-drawer perfect. Visually a lovely 1970 record that should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This rare blue Liberty label, ultimate first issue record plays even above its high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and detailed sound – this is a real hi-fi recording with in-the-room quality sound. Any surface sounds are minuscule and this is an exceptional clean pressing for a fairly challenging album. Acoustic songs with no hiding places for sound blemishes, so glad to state there are barely any and this was a joy from start to finish. Few copies will match or outperform this impressively clean example. Both channels are clean and sharp, I feel very sure this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful and elsusive record – this album did not sell in great numbers – but should have done. This copy will prove difficult indeed to find significantly better and merits strong recommendation. If quality folk music with delightful female vocal is for you – Chameleon is a gem.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
