 Fantastic 4 northern soul set 

You can't get more northern or more soulful than Detroit's Fantastic 4. Fronted by the rotund Sweet James, this group's deep soul is particularly satisfying.

I'm known as DJ Eddie Riott. As I write this, I'm in my home studio, mere blocks away from the Golden World studio where these were recorded. In fact, Ed Wingate, Golden World founder, lived on my street, and I went to Jr. High school with his son, John.

One could walk into Golden World at any time and see groups rehearsing and recording. Hearing the Fantastic Four practicing harmonies in an office as I walked down the hall is and experience I’ll never forget. You could hear producers discussing their projects. One time I heard two producers discussing how they wanted their intro to be like “Selfish One,” (Jackie Ross single on Chess) (Detroit producers respected and emulated Chicago producers and vice-versa)

But Golden World had a modern sound that appealed to young aficionados like me. The Parliaments, The Capitols (Cool Jerk), J.J. Barnes, and Edwin Starr were some of the popular artists who recorded there.

Golden world moved up so fast as to challenge Motown. Berry Gordy responded by buying Golden World, the studio, the artists, everything -- to put them out of business. He must have made Wingate an offer he couldn't refuse.

These are nine of the ten Ric Tic releases of the Fantastic Four and one from the Motown studio.
