Description

THE COOP FAST FOLK MUSICAL MAGAZINE LP - Featuring various modern folk artists including Frank Christian, Erik Frandsen, Suzanne Vega, Brian Rose, Dave Van Ronk, Paul Kaplan, David Massengill, Ilene Weiss, Skip Barthold, and Ed McCurdy. SE-101 stereo 12" LP record album. White label release in generic sleeve. Released February 1982. Condition: Record is close to NM. Original generic white cover is VG++ with some corner wear. Comments: The Coop was an innovative monthly magazine with a full-length record album. It was founded in February, 1982 to discover, document and champion the current folk song movement. It was recorded and put together by a volunteer staff as a non-profit venture. We are selling the very first record released by The Coop. It is most noteworthy because it contains one track by the then unknown Suzanne Vega titled "Cracking." Ms. Vega, fresh out of Barnard College, had a song in the inaugural copy of Fast Folk Musical Magazine, five years before her big hit "Luka." Ms. Vega said that during her involvement with Fast Folk in the early 80's, she often battled with founder Jack Hardy, who seemed intent on being the paternalistic guru of this new folk movement. "I wanted to puncture him, to bring him down to street level," she said. Nonetheless, she said, "those were probably some of the best years I can remember." She added, "We had a tribe, and Jack was the nucleus of it."
