FELL,MARK PAT THOMAS REALITY IS NOT A THEORY LP
Captured live at the University of Sheffield in March 2025, 'Reality Is Not A Theory' marks the inaugural collaboration between Mark Fell and Pat Thomas, two prominent figures in British experimental music. With roots in Sheffield's electronic underground and jazz/modernist art music respectively, their distinct backgrounds converge in this album, presenting 'algorithmic and improvised music for computer and piano'. The performance commences with Fell's electronic sounds mimicking acoustic percussion, while Thomas explores the piano's lower registers. As Fell's electronics expand harmonically, Thomas shifts to wide, repeating clusters that evolve into chord patterns, blending extreme dissonance with deep lyricism. Throughout, Fell's work shifts towards drum-like sounds, evoking improv drumming styles, as both artists maintain rhythmic independence, allowing serendipitous correspondences to guide the music. Recorded in the Mark Firth Hall, the setting offers a metaphor for their collaborative process. Enclosed in a striking cover designed by Fell, with liner notes by Francis Plagne, 'Reality Is Not A Theory' is a stimulating record of these two contemporary music pioneers' meeting.
