Part of an educational history radio series, featuring spoken-word narration, sound effects, and interviews with citizens, giving information on early history, settlers and pioneers, native Indian tribes, environment, culture, industry, and the origin of the names.

Ferryland was originally established as a station for migratory fishermen in the late 16th century but had earlier been used by the French, Spanish, and Portuguese. By the 1590s it was one of the most popular fishing harbours in Newfoundland and acclaimed by Sir Walter Raleigh. Ferryland was called "Farilham" by the Portuguese fishermen and "Forillon" by the French—it later became anglicized to its current name "Ferryland." .

Shawinigan is a city located on the Saint-Maurice River in the Mauricie area of Quebec. Before 1958 the city was known as Shawinigan Falls. Before Shawinigan Falls was established, the local economy had been largely based on lumber and agriculture. In the late 1890s, Shawinigan Falls drew the interest of foreign entrepreneurs such as John Joyce and John Edward Aldred of the Shawinigan Water & Power Company (SW&P), and of Hubert Biermans of the Belgo Canadian Pulp & Paper Company because of its particular geographic situation. Its falls had the potential to become a favorable location for the production of hydroelectricity. The hydro-electric generating station contributed to rapid economic growth and the town achieved several firsts in Canadian history: first production of aluminum (1901) and carborundum (1908).
