An interesting, late-'60s psychedelic group, Houston's Fever Tree is most famous for their single "San Francisco Girls," with its dramatic melody, utopian lyrics, and searing fuzz guitar. Most of their best material produced some fairly distinctive tunes with more of a classical/Baroque influence that was backed by strong arrangements than were usually found in psychedelic groups. Their pretty, wistful ballads (enhanced on their first album by arranger David Angel, who had also worked on Love's classic Forever Changes) endure better than their dirge-like fuzz grinders, which epitomize some of the more generic aspects of heavy psychedelia.

Fever Tree "pretty much had the basic structure of the songs figured out when we went into the studio, but most of the arrangements bloomed in the studio," multi instrumentalist Rob Landes said. "For instance, the beginning of the opening track, you hear an old pump organ play the opening of Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor. When we recorded that piece, somebody looked over and saw this old pump organ sitting in the corner of the studio. I went over and began playing the Bach on it and Scott (Holtzman) said what a great way to begin the opening. Somebody literally ran around the studio clattering the castanets to get a stereo effect with the several microphones that were set around the studio. If you listen closely, you can hear the squeak of the old bellows as I pumped the organ. So many of the ideas just happened as we were in the studio. I still love to listen to the rain with the occasional car driving by, and the rolling thunder that is present in Come With Me (The Rainsong). Take note as you listen to it, and you will experience how it actually happened that night when we were recording my vocal track — no manipulation of any sort — it is exactly how it happened at that moment. In retrospect for all the elements to align themselves in such a way — it truly seems surreal" ... "We absolutely loved this first album. It was probably way beyond our hopes and expectations by the time we finished it."

Vinyl: EX+.  Both surfaces retain their original deep, glossy sheen.  I wonder whether it has ever been played, it looks just pristine. Under an ultra strong light I found two super wispy short hairlines which of course are not feelable. This LP plays like silk. Smooth audio without anything untoward. No clicks or ticks, not even any static or background noise. It will be an upgrade for most psych collectors. I personally have never seen a better copy in my whole time collecting (35+ years).

 Great audio delivery and warm and detailed sound on playback at a loud volume (which is how I always listen to my LPs prior to listing and it's always an immense pleasure to return to this one). This is a beautifully clean pressing (and I must emphasise again how difficult it is to find a copy which plays this well). The whole LP sounds absolutely great and plays to a high standard with superb clarity, no groove-wear and no distortion and is very strictly graded a strong EX++  for audio without anything untoward. Of course, NO skips, NO jumps, NO sticks.

 Sleeve: EX+.   The sleeve is fully intact without any splits or tears. There are no creases at all. The spine is fully readable. the opening super crisp. Any storage wear to the bottom edge is absolutely minimal. This sleeve is a jewel! A super rare LP these days and only a few of  these do resurface these days. Certainly the first I have come across in the last few years.Of course  NO tears, NO writing.
