Alongside Pink Floyd's debut album from the same year, this 1967 American release is among the very earliest to combine rock and electronics in a deliberate, Progressive way. While the Floyd used an oscillator or two as "effects", FFH had actually built a self-contained playable instrument from audio generators and theremins which was used in live performance. (They predate both The USA and Silver Apples in doing something like this.) Unlike those two bands, FFH also used electric guitar - a Gretsch with custom electronics installed in its body. Cauldron has a great variety of songs, from the short all-electronic interludes to the 10-minute spacy guitar showcase "Fantasy". FFH sounds like a hybrid of Jefferson Airplane, Red Krayola and Pere Ubu - the latter band owing FFH quite a big debt I'd say. At times, singer Nancy Blossom wields a vocal power comparable to Grace Slick; on the nightmarish title track she's especially memorable amongst the song's maelstrom of radical sound collage. Produced/engineered by Grateful Dead tech Dan Healy, this San Francisco masterpiece really makes one wonder if music history might have differed had electronic-psych pioneers like FFH gained wider exposure and influence.
