SHAKE THAT THING ! (1963)

Back in the early '60s there was a local act in Dallas who called himself Finney-Mo. He also appeared on record as Finnimo and Finni-Moe. He cut several singles and all were in the same groove as Big Bo and the Arrows; fun R&B with a roadhouse feel to them.

This might just be a New Orleans label since it sure does sound like one. Finnimo is Leslie Arthur Finney from Dallas. Don't know much about his early years as evidenced on this record, but by the early '80s he did a drag-queen sort of thing where he told bawdy jokes and sang R&B standards. He got a contract from Malaco in the early `80s, and a $10,000.00 signing bonus thanks to his friend Johnnie Taylor.

To celebrate his good fortune, he and some of his south Dallas buddies proceeded to party down, and they ran through the $10,000.00 signing bonus by drinking a huge amount of cheap wine and beer for a solid month. At the end of that month, Finnimo had a heart attack and died. He never made it in to the studio, and drank up all of Malaco's signing bonus !!! What a guy. [thanks to the amazing Jim Yanaway]

This is a honking, churning, wonderful slice of soul that sound like a house band having a very cool evening. The tracks here are “Shake That Thing” and “My Baby’s Gone.” From the matrix coding on this record, it seems to be from June of 1963. This Texas shaker should be on the maps of all the northern soul collectors –I suspect it's a gem just waiting to be discovered.
