Flamenco Fever, M&K RealTime, Direct to Disc, German pressing. This is a listing for a superb copy of this great Direct to Disc piece, considered by many to be the holy grail of all audiophile recordings. Certainly, it IS the holy grail of the M&K's! It is also the holy grail of Absolutely Sound who believes that this is the best LP ever made! If one limits oneself to audiophile recordings, such statement is very likely true! The record visually grades as near mint plus with only a few paper scuffs that can only be seen under a POWERFUL HALOGEN LAMP! It play grades perfectly. On a scale of 1 to 10 with 9.0 being near mint and 10.00 being "stone cold mint," this one gets the 10.0 hands down (and I have rarely ever play graded an audiophile [or half speed] recording with such a grade). For an unusual exception, please read below. I just acquired this LP today, an incredible and timely find considering that I already have listed two other M&K's (Earl Hines and the Sampler LP). I listened to and recorded it for play grade and archival purposes. It quite likely was never played before (The previous owner, recently deceased, appears to have never played his records judging from what I witnessed this morning). There is one minor flaw having to do with the play grade. There is a minuscule warp. The warp is completely invisible to the naked eye. It can only be seen if one is viewing the record spinning on a platter, and even then it is only slight. The sound that the warp produces (not audible in the sound bytes provided) will not be audible to anyone with an unsophisticated sound system. Since my cartridge is a "low-rider" type, any record that will play on my system will play on any! My cartridge tracks at only one milligram above the surface of a record. With no clamp or vacuum device a "thump" can be heard, but barely. It is like the first time one ever listens to a Pink Floyd Money track (with the heartbeat). One is not sure whether anything was being heard at all. The "heartbeat" in this case, however, does not increase with the intensity of each additional beat! If one uses a clamp as I do, the thump is more noticeable than with no clamp (I recorded my CD WITH the clamp and did not want to record again). For those with a vacuum pump (not at all uncommon with high end phono systems), I suspect that the thump would be totally inaudible. The thump is present only at the beginning of Side 1. It is NOT present on Side 2. I do not believe that this flaw is enough to sway even the most serious audiophile away from this record. This is because of the play grade otherwise! Please realize that there is absolutely no other noise WHATSOEVER (and I listened very carefully in an acoustically silent listening room)! The jacket gets a VG++ grade due to seam wrinkles that were likely incurred at the pressing plant or during shipping. There is also a near microscopic amount of surface wear that is only visible if the jacket is tilted at just the right angle. The record was play graded on an audiophile system employing Basis Ovation, Graham Industries, Transfiguration (Phoenix), Sound Applications, and Jeff Rowland componentry.
