Label Conditions: Both in stunning condition: ultra clean, very fresh and attractive with just a tiny chip on side one near the hole rim, but barely a spindle trace to be seen.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 154 grams. Very thick and solid and heavier than most found.

Rarity: Scarce: not a huge seller and this in supreme condition, I have rarely, if ever found one quite like it.

Musicians: Jeremy Spencer – guitar, vocals, piano; Danny Kirwan – guitar, vocals; John McVie – bass; Mick Fleetwood – percussion, drums. Guest: Christine McVie – backing vocals (uncredited), but is credited as cover designer inside.

Brief Info: The first post-Peter Green Fleetwood Mac album and last to feature Jeremy Spencer, it did not sell well and only reached a lowely 39 in the UK, way below par compared to their early titles. It faired even worse in the US and did not chart at all in the rest of Europe – hence this is an elusive copy and one in supreme condition. The mood of the album is gentle and has a fifties feel with Spencer’s tributes to the stars and music of the time. Christine McVie does feature on vocals but was not a member until after it’s release. Original copies that include the elusive insert are quite hard to find especially in this type of condition. This is a fantastic example with a very attractive and fresh gatefold cover. The folded insert in practically mint also and this fragile set will prove immensely difficult to find much better. A superb very early pressed copy with impressive weight and nigh-on perfect sound, this appears hardly even played.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): and looks even better, this is a beautiful cover. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group and includes the insert booklet and the original heavy duty polylined inner sleeve.

Cover – Front & Back: Superb with cleanest and freshest looking artwork I have yet seen for this beautiful cover. A lovely graphic of innocence and credited to Christine McVie as designer. This UK matt version is usually seen grubby and aged but this front looks simply fantastic. It is almost a case of spot-the-blemish, well under light a tiny trace of adhesive is seen on the front hear the right edge, but that is pretty much it. This is nigh-on invisible unless searched for. The only reason why a top Mint(–) grade was not given is for rubbing on the bottom back edge that few will ever escape totally. This is as clean, fresh and attractive as when made back in 1970. Crease-free, no grubbiness and unusually, not even a hint of any ring wear, this superb example could prove a near ultimate upgrade for many.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Immaculate, this looks practically new.

Top Edges: Barely any hint of wear with just a tiny rub to the front right corner tip. Both straight, neat and flush.

Bottom Edges: The front is superb again, the back has light to moderate rubbing.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The front edge is closed, so the record enters on the back edge. Both are beautifully neat with hardly any wear – any traces of thickening or burring seen viewed end-on are minuscule, both guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

Spine and Text: A near perfect spine: solid and wide, uncrushed, straight with barely any compression. Folded square so the edges are parallel and almost perfectly flush. I always consider worthy of mention as it makes for a much tidier and neater cover for the more discerning. No text was printed on this, but graphic flows around and there is no wear to the main surface or the two vulnerable fold hinges.

Corners: The spine pair are crisp and barely rubbed at all. The top right pair have only tiny tip rubs. Only the bottom right back has a moderate rub, the front lesser. Excellent to near mint shape retained, the rubbing barely even registers on the main full-on artwork and only really seen viewed edge-on.

Cover Summary: A supremely attractive all-round example of this lovely very early 1970’s cover, one that will prove immensely difficult to find better. UK versions of this album were not laminated and are seldom seen in this type of condition. Cover-protected for most of it’s existence and the surfaces barely even handled, that is the difference. A scarce original cover that will please most-all collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: a plain white polylined inner that has two immaculate window circles, crystal-clear lining and no edge splits or repairs. Some natural crinkle and the odd light crease with a little fine edge darkening of the adhesive. It is UK Patented with ‘Foreign Patents Pending’ text. On the front top left corner, the retailer wrote (in pencil) ‘RSLP 9004’ with the original selling pre-decimal price of 43/9. This converts to modern currency to approximately £2.19. I consider these original details in old LSD coinage important as it helps put a definitive date on the record and date of purchase.

The Insert Booklet: PRACTICALLY MINT: and little short of as made. The insert has one manufacture’s fold and is very clean and looks little handled with genuine freshness retained. No real creasing – the merest hint of a thumb trace on the right edge – this almost nit-picking faint. All edges crisp and ultra sharp. A lovely item with vintage band member pictures including Mick with long hair. This 4-page booklet often missing and only available with early examples anywhere.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(–): a superb visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and heavily pressed on top quality vinyl. A record hardly even played on all the evidence with any surface traces being super-fine, faint and hardly any at all. Visually a super record that should please most-all collectors again.

I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This beautiful original 1970 record that plays up to it’s high visual grading and beyond with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even registered and this is an exceptional clean pressing. A top quality first issue with impressive mass and weight, the way the connoisseur vinyl collectors like them. The fact this one has hardly been played is great news on a more gentle album and few available copies will outperform this very early British pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played no more than a couple or three times, including my mandatory play-grade, clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove immensely difficult to find better and merits my highest possible recommendation.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
