Label Conditions: Both incredibly clean, fresh and attractive with only a very small few light, fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. I have seldom seen a pair of Blue Horizon labels look better.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 153 grams. A heavy and quite substantial weight for this very early example.

Brief Info: The second album by ‘Peter Green’s’ Fleetwood Mac – an era when the band played real blues on arguably the most famous label of the genre, Blue Horizon. Pure class and at last, an early stereo copy that does it near full justice. I have never found this an easy one to find in suitable conditions to offer. For some reason, it’s usually found less than carefully played and on goodness knows what. It was justifiably popular, hence most that surface are substantially used and that lovely sound ruined. This heavy-pressed copy is in lovely clean condition for looks and sound, it also has a very attractive cover. So for fans of this evergreen blues band, and Blue Horizon collectors, this is a very fine opportunity not to be missed.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: and actually looks better, only slightly marked down a small cluster of press marks on the back. A gatefold format with the front and back laminated, it retains it’s large stereo sticker on the back as seen in close-up. The inside is matt and smooth, it has four external flipbacks on the top and bottom edges. Printed and made in England by Ernest J. Day. Also includes the original polylined inner sleeve.

Lamination – Front & Back: Both sides retain shiny and clear laminate with only light traces of any dulling under angled light. It has avoided any lifting and has very creases at all, any present are only fine and light and mostly on the edges. As stated further up, a small cluster of dot press marks that again show little with normal viewing, and minus these I would have added at least a further (+) to the grading because this is still very attractive. The huge ‘STEREO’ sticker on the back is only very mildly aged and has clearly never been removed or picked at. A strong looking sleeve and little detracts.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The main two matt panels are little short of immaculate with barely anything to fault. All four flipbacks are solid and crisp with neat ends with very little pulling of the ends. So often these inside flipback ends become sticky as the laminate shrinks back, resulting in large tears which this one has avoided.

Top Edges: Both unworn, smooth and fully laminated, also mainly straight.

Bottom Edges: As above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Both clean, sharp with barely any wear and guaranteed untrimmed. Even viewed end-on, scarcely even a hint of any thickening or burring, the record enters on the back edge.

Spine and Text: A lovely spine that looks little worn. Solid, straight with minimal compression and folded square, so all edges meet up very closely together and parallel. This is one that will always form a central crease from opening, and many will shed the laminate. This one has a fairly gentle crease but the laminate remains intact with no flaking or loss. All text is fully present and unworn with any sinkage into the crease very light.

Corners: All crisp and very neat with any tip rubbing very small indeed. Very fine to excellent shape is retained.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this classic late 60’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. This generally fresh and clean original cover should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): a heavy-duty plain white polylined inner that is UK patented with ‘Foreign Patents Pending’ text. Two immaculate window circles and very clear lining with minimal creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs. Any discolouration gentle and light.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++) / EXCELLENT: side two has a fine hairline that has no affect on sound, that apart, little else. It is without doubt one of the cleanest copies of this album I have seen for ages. A really lovely visual copy that is very clean with a really strong shine, intense black and quite heavily pressed on high quality vinyl. We all know the perils these old blues classics potentially faced. This has some quiet songs and so often they are ruined by heavy usage that inflicts noise and groove wear which this copy has totally avoided. Visually a lovely record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This vintage blues classic plays even above its high visual grading with very little to fault at all. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear. Sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. A very fine CBS pressing for Blue Horizon, this specialist blues label seldom fails to please. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and nothing of any real note spoilt the play-grade experience. Few copies will outperform this very early stereo example significantly I feel sure, this being the best I have heard to some time. Clearly CBS thought most purchases would be in mono and did not initially make a dedicated stereo cover, so these are more elusive in the two-channel mode. This copy could prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended to all fans of real Fleetwood Mac blues.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
