By 1969, Gram Parsons had already built the foundation of the country-rock movement through his work with the International Submarine Band and the Byrds, but his first album with the Flying Burrito Brothers, The Gilded Palace of Sin, was where he revealed the full extent of his talents, and it ranks among the finest and most influential albums the genre would ever produce. As a songwriter, Parsons delivered some of his finest work on this set; "Hot Burrito No. 1" and "Hot Burrito No. 2" both blend the hurt of classic country weepers with a contemporary sense of anger, jealousy, and confusion, and "Sin City" can either be seen as a parody or a sincere meditation on a city gone mad, and it hits home in both contexts. Parsons was rarely as strong as a vocalist as he was here, and his covers of "Dark End of the Street" and "Do Right Woman" prove just how much he had been learning from R&B as well as C&W. And Parsons was fortunate enough to be working with a band who truly added to his vision, rather than simply backing him up; the distorted swoops of Sneaky Pete Kleinow's fuzztone steel guitar provides a perfect bridge between country and psychedelic rock, and Chris Hillman's strong and supportive harmony vocals blend flawlessly with Parsons' (and he also proved to be a valuable songwriting partner, collaborating on a number of great tunes with Gram). While The Gilded Palace of Sin barely registered on the pop culture radar in 1969, literally dozens of bands (the Eagles most notable among them) would find inspiration in this music and enjoy far greater success. But no one ever brought rock and country together quite like the Flying Burrito Brothers, and this album remains their greatest accomplishment.
(EXCERPT FROM AN ONLINE REVIEW BY MARK DEMING, ALL MUSIC GUIDE /ALLMUSIC.COM/)
This is probably the only Country-Rock album (Byrds "Sweetheart of the Rodeo" notwithstanding) that managed to withstand the test of time, the critical judgment AND the whims of popular opinion at the same time. Recorded in late 1969, just as Gram Parsons was rubbing shoulders with Rolling Stones and the post-hippie crowd, this is an opulent, decadent, but ultimately a very passionate and heartfelt statement on human condition in America at the turn of the decade. "Sin City" has got to be the ultimate song on the trails and tribulations of the country boy lost (and sinning) in big city. The musicians, of course, are the Royalty of the country and rock: Gram Parsons, Sneeky Pete, Chris Hillman (for my money, the best white bass player ever - with the possible exception of Paul McCartney) and Chris Ethridge. My favorite tracks on the album are two "Deep Soul" covers, showing Gram Parson’s profound love and affection for his native south: Aretha Franklin’s "Do right woman", and James Carr’s poignant "Dark end of the street". For those who think that Gram’s covering soul classics was an accident, remember: he (along with Otis Redding) also covered William Bell’s "You don’t miss your water" . This is Country meets Rock meet Blues meet Soul album, and they all have a good time. This is a part of American cultural heritage and history, whose proper place is in Smithsonian museum.

· CONDITION:
· THE RECORD
(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)
(a) WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant). For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.
(b) The record is pressed on a RELATIVELY thick, inflexible vinyl. This is NOT a thin, flimsy ('dynaflex' type), vinyl, but not the thickest, most rigid vinyl, either.
(c) The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.
(d) Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
