SCORING HUGELY with their chart busting singles 'Hocus Pocus' and 'Sylvia' Dutch rockers Focus couldn't have been more at the center of international attention when 'Hamburger Concerto' was unleashed on the public. Thankfully for all concerned it wasn't a let down. Far from it. This album capitalised on the bands enormous goodwill by serving up a brace of stirring hard rock and semi intellectualised prog. Thijs Van Leer's cool flute added a layer of melody that, under any other circumstances, the instrumental tracks might otherwise have lost. Of course, the man of the match is very much guitarist Jan Akkerman who's amazing style is about as futuristic as any other leading six stringer from the era and here I'm thinking of contemporaries such as Jeff Beck, Ollie Halsall and Alan Holdsworth.
Side two is devoted to one long track, the Hamburger Concerto itself. Broken into six parts the track moves through some heavy but never very complex twists and turns and never playing to a high brow crowd preferring to immerse the listener in a wash of heavy melodic power prog. Look out for Leer's superb vocal trills in part II 'Rare' sandwiched between blast of killer Hammond organ.
This auction is part of a fantastic collection of seventies rock which I was lucky enough to acquire. Most of these records were stored with the utmost care and sparsely played. Some were possibly never played or may have been for just a handful of times.

Vinyl: Beautiful clean and shiny condition. No spindle marks on labels and no other signs of use. Grades as shop fresh MINT!
Cover: Again, no signs of use. Issued in a 'unipak' style gate-fold cover. Sharp corners, no dings, no bends, no ring wear, no split seams and no creases. Spine is stiff and uncrushed. Looks like it stepped out of the factory yesterday. Beautiful and impossible to find like this 43 years after release. Shop fresh. Grades as MINT!
