Description
HERE'S blues singer MARGARET JOHNSON in her first release for Victor in 1926: "FOLKS IN NEW YORK AIN'T LIKE FOLKS DOWN SOUTH" and "MY MAN'S DONE DONE ME DIRTY." She's a pungent blues contralto, and these are her first electrical sides.
Her accompaniment, the PHIL WORDE TRIO, is most unusual: Concertina, Banjo and String bass! It may be unique.
This Margaret Johnson was one of the first releases in Victor's new "woke" policy of featuring and actively promoting Negro artists. The company dragged its corporate feet for six years after OKeh started the "Race" record boom in 1920. But in a dramatic about-face, starting in mid-1926, Victor more than made up for lost time, and amassed the finest catalogue of Blues, Hot Dance and Country music ever seen.
This original 1926 "Race" "Scroll" Victor 20178 is in lovely E condition. Slight rubs, a little grainy.
