Label Conditions: Both supreme condition: ultra clean, fresh and highly attractive with any of the tiny few spindle traces very small, fine and faint. This rare and somewhat obscure album appears hardly played reitterated by superb sound throughout.

Rarity: Rare: another overlooked and somewhat obscure American band that got a brief release in the UK and pressed in minuscule numbers, probably just a single run. Not even easy finding any reference to this one even in price guides, this one appears to have completely slipped under the radar.

Brief Info: The second of two albums this Boston American band made. They played psychedelic rock and this is a lovely album. Issued in the United States on ABC Records, here on Stateside, this will rarely be seen as a UK pressing however. These little-known US bands were largely overlooked due to lack of promotion here, and I guess few would even have even heard of Ford Theatre. So a rare opportunity for collectors of the more unusual, this is a superb copy as well with nigh-on perfect sound throughout.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: and arguably worthy of a (+). A single format with front laminate, this wraps around the closed edges and ends on three rear external flipbacks. The main back panel is matt and smooth. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse, includes the plain white unlined inner sleeve.

Lamination & Front: A very colourful psych-style front, the laminate retains fine shine, freshness and clarity. No lifting of any note and any of the very few creases being mostly fine and light. Dull is seen, more under light, around the rim shape that is always so hard to find with thick early-pressed records inside. A strong example of a near extinct cover.

Cover Back: The back is mostly very clean and still fresh and white, any grubbiness traces minimal and very light. The three flipbacks all neat and solid, just a small end burr on the bottom and no grime-lines to the ends.

Top Edge: Unworn, smooth and straight.

Bottom Edge: As above with just a tiny surface chip.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with very little wear. Any thickening or burring minimal and light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced. The laminate end strip on the front still very much present and barely worn.

Spine and Text: An immaculate unworn spine: solid, straight with barely any compression, the ends are pinched in manufacture. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate, this also well centred.

Corners: A little tip rubbing, but nothing remotely major. Fine to very fine shape retained.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this highly elusive late 1960’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This attractive item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: PRACTICALLY MINT: a plain solid white unlined inner that looks practically new. Uncreased, clean and fresh with no edge splits or repairs. This has the ‘PATENT APPLIED FOR’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): arguably even better. A super visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and very solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface trace marks minuscule and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. Visually a super record that should please most-all collectors.

I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This obscure and rare UK-pressed album plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even registered and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will match or outperform this very early issue I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this impressive record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
