Label Conditions: Both clean and attractive with around moderate spindle marks, these show little with normal viewing.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 133 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Brief Info: Not strictly ‘progressive’ but one of the earliest and most prized and wonderful albums from the vintage Harvest catalogue, a label noted for its progressive music and one of the most difficult to find. From 1967 the psych wave was drifting into all forms of music from pop to folk and this was no exception. Groups like the Incredible String Band (ISB) started the revolution and others like Dr Strangely Strange and now Forest followed their lead. They made just two albums, both on Harvest and are both extremely rare and difficult to find, they have eluded many collectors for years only selling in very small numbers. Their career was pushed forward by John Peel and eventually they got their chance with the progressive Harvest label, this debut was recorded at the Abbey Road studio, all the songs were original and brilliantly captivating. The stunning artwork was done by Joan Melville. Peel does the comprehensive sleeve notes. Musically haunting, with some strangely-strange melodies and great improvisations. This has long been a connoisseurs prog-folk albums and highly sort after. I have always found this much harder to find than the second album and only ever seen three before. A very nice copy too, it plays very well with little unwanted and includes an attractive cover – a few blemishes yes, but this will not be too easy to find better, the Harvest inner is included too. Not a conoisseur’s copy, but most collectors will enjoy owning it.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High: without any doubt, one of the most eerily beautiful and charismatic covers in the classic Harvest catalogue and this one does it fine justice.

Cover Grade and Format: The back top left corner has a small price sticker tear and a tiny one opposite. NOT taking into account of these flaws, I will grade this cover as EX. You, the collector make your mind up how much this degrades. An unlaminated gatefold format with smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England and including the Harvest promotional inner.

Cover Front: Apart from some light edgewear encroaching into view, mainly on the bottom edge, this has little else to fault. Superb artwork that is unfaded or rubbed and avoiding creases or significant marks. The artwork detail is lovely as I hope my close-up pictures will show.

Cover Back: As stated in my cover grading, the top left corner has a fairly small price sticker tear and there is a very small rub-pull mark near the opposite top corner, this one shows little. Very mild traces of wear with some ultra faint rub traces and a very light ring arc near the top edge. No creasing, few marks and generally clean too – this lighter coloured side is highly prone to grubbiness and severe ringwear which here has been avoided. The main blemishes are not in the line of vision and most collector’s eyes will be more drawn to the main area of the artwork and not to the very corner areas. In terms of a 40-year-old cover, this has little wear and looks marvellous. If however, the small sticker pulls are an issue, please do not bid.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Very mild and faint grubbiness or ‘set-off’ near the top edges but little else to fault.

Top Edges: Mainly light patchy rubbing, slightly more towards the left side.

Bottom Edges: Less than moderate rubbing.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, odd small edge rub, fairly sharp with minimal wear and no feathering. Record enters on this back edge.

Spine and Text: Some fairly modest darkening with age on the white surface and some light rubs to the top and bottom but showing little with no artwork. This is solid and straight, uncompressed and square, both right edges meet up perfectly together and parallel. The ‘Forest’ text is perfect and unworn.

Corners: The cornertips have rubbed but no excessively so, all retain decent shape.

Cover Summary: A highly respectable and still attractive example of this rare Harvest cover. Being so few around will mean it will not prove easy to find significantly better. Many collectors will enjoy this one.

The Inner: EX(-), the lining has gone but has been replaced with a Japanese anti-static soft inner. A little light creasing and the glue has browned on the seams but the edges are unsplit. This does give clues to its great age but overall still quite attractive. There is a mildish circular stain on the back.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EX/EX(-) but in real terms far better, it has a few light surface marks but these have no sound. Mainly fine surface scuffs or fine hairlines, totally superficial and inaudible. A fine visual copy that is very clean with fine shine, intense black and very solidly pressed. Visually a strong record that should please many collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This rare Harvest record plays above its fine visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal and this being a very delicate album – a few mild traces on the quietest of passages will prove near unavoidable. No significant pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. The few fine marks present are ignored. The early Harvest titles are the crown jewels within the famous catalogue, prized and elusive, for enjoyable sound, this will prove difficult to find much better. Both channels are clean, sharp and focused and nothing of note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be highly recommended. Like the cover, not perfectionist standard for visuals, but given the vintage, its still a lovely copy. Any doubts – do not bid – simple.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
