Ferdinand Kriwet (1942, Düsseldorf, Germany) is a German visual and audio artist who has produced films and sound works for radio and television, in particular throughout the 1960's and 1970's.

As a sound artist, Kriwet is more known for his Hörspiele (radioplays) serie named Hörtexte (radiotexts) produced for German public radio stations and composed with edited sound bites taken from mass media broadcasts.

Some info on the release:  See Broken Music book. His debut release. Very rare release back from 1972 released by the german publisher Art Press Verlag. Limited edition, only very few copies exist, not sure how many. In any case, one of the releases that nearly never turn up for sale. Features field recordings, sound collages, cut-ups from soccer games of the german soccer team Fortuna Dusseldorf recorded and totally manipulated!! Instantly come to mind the works of Franz Mon, Ernst Jandl, Gerhard Ruhm, Mauricio Kagel and Henri Pousseur, Dieter Schnebel, Lily Greenham, Josef-Anton Riedl, Helmut Lachenmann, Ake Hodell, Bernard Heidsieck, Brion Gysin, Sten Hanson, Bob Cobbing, Francois Dufrene, Paul de Vree and  John Cage. Ferdinand Kriwet is a multimedia artist and poet who has produced many seminal films and sound works for radio and television, in particular throughout the 1960s and 1970s. Kriwet created the work Apollovision whilst in America at the time of the Apollo moon launch, his aim being to compose a work derived from all the information he gathered on radio and television about the Apollo 11 launch.

Kriwet is most well know for his sound collages, originally broadcast on German radio. He describes these works as 'Hörtexts / Radio Texts - pieces composed of noise, sound bites and samples, which include 'Apollo America' (1969), 'Voice of America' (1970), 'Campaign' (1973), all snapshots of American media at the beginning of the 1970s and 'Radioball' (1975) and 'Ball' (1974), reflecting soccer sports in Germany in the 1970s. His politically engaged and avant-garde approach was influenced by aesthetic and Conceptual currents in Constructivism, New Music, Beat Generation and Pop.

Pi­on­eer­ing mul­ti­me­dia artist and poet, best known for his ‘Bild-Ton-Collage’, or sound-picture-collages. It is this com­bin­a­tion of the ab­sorp­tion and present­a­tion of mass media with pointed com­ment­ary that allows Kriwet’s work to seem ab­so­lutely current, even if he is doc­u­ment­ing a moment in history, and even if his tech­n­iques have been used before and since. William Burroughs extended his literary cut-up and fold-in ex­per­i­ments to tape, adding a veneer of hokey mysticism to the com­bin­a­tion of existing texts and randomly inserted re­cord­ings, John Oswald’s plun­der­phon­ic manglings of hit songs might come laden with theory but remain a one-note joke, like the more recent micro-editing efforts of Cas­set­te­boy, and Double Dee and Steinski’s feverish Lessons in the musical heritage of early hip-hop are confined to a single musical scene. Kriwet stands out from these fellow media collage artists not just for being a pioneer of the form, inspiring those that followed, but because his efforts seem to form a complete, coherent essay offering a genuine un­der­stand­ing of a period of past time. Those text overlay’s might hover dan­ger­ously close to agitprop, but Kriwet keeps a cool head, engaged in a genuine attempt, like David Bowie’s Newton in The Man Who Fell To Earth, to absorb the welter of images, sounds and texts tran­s­mit­ted over the airwaves.

Ferdinand Kriwet is a multimedia artist who has engaged with text, language and concrete poetry since the 1960s. Kriwet's circular use of text also has strong associations with the mandala, an Indian form imbued with spiritual significance in Buddhism and Hinduism. Moreover, it has the function of disrupting the linear process of writing, as words and names join together or are juxtaposed to suggest a clashing and fusing of ideas. Kriwet's signs, like Finlay's landscape pieces and wall paintings, were an attempt to move concrete poetry quite literally into the world. The use of the sign form to contest subjects such as militarism and sexuality, and to co-opt the public inscription of power, is also an interesting precedent for the work of Jenny Holzer and other artists in the 1980s. The circular form is further explored in Kriwet's Text Dias and Text Sails, 1970, giant signs printed on PVC, a group of which are displayed in the ICA's Concourse.

Ferdinand Kriwet was born in Düsseldorf in 1942, and lives in Dresden. As well as his text works, the artist has also produced 'sound-picture-collages' and experiments in radio, television and publishing. Kriwet was included in the seminal concrete poetry exhibition at the ICA, Between Poetry and Painting, curated by Jasia Reichardt in 1965; more recently, he had a solo show at The Modern Institute, Glasgow, in 2008.
