Description
Frank Luther Stop Yer Playin' (3:28) b/w Divorce Blues (3:06) 10" 78RPM on Timely Tunes C-1558 from 1931 that comes in the original and VERY RARE Timely Tunes halfsleeve. By the info I found on the web, Timely Tunes 78 recordings were released/distributed by RCA Victor, and are a RARITY, as they only released a small number of records in the span of just 4-months in 1931 at the start of the depression era before going out of business.
The version of Stop Yer Playin' found on this 78 was recorded in New York, New York on March 20, 1931 and according to the RCA Victor catalog it features the following instruments: Guitar and violin, although there also seems to be a clarinet and kazoo; and the version of Divorce Blues found on this 78 was recorded in New York, New York on March 20, 1931 and according to the RCA Victor catalog it features the following instruments: Violin, harmonica, octoreen, guitar, and ukulele.
As you'll see in the photos attached below, this 78 comes in the original and VERY RARE Timely Tunes vanity halfsleeve. In light of the really nice condition of this 78, I just had to give it a spin, and found that both sides were probably the cleanest 78 sides I've ever come across. I've attached a nearly 2.5-minute sound sample from the actual 78 in this auction, and I've included short segments of the beginning and ending of both sides of this 78 to give you an idea of how nice this 78 sounds. Just to be clear, what you hear in the sound sample attached below was created in my computer through digitally editing the 4 segments together, and I DID NOT use any effects or software to make the 78 sound better; it just went from my turntable, through my turntable preamp, and into my soundcard.
The sides of this 78 sound really clean, although there are a few quick clicks here and there, which if you were to import it into a sound editing program, I'm sure you'd be able to clean those up with ease. If you listen to the sound sample, you'll notice that the vocal is very present and the instruments are also very present. I used a very light needle weight (LP style needle) to play this 78 to avoid causing any added wear, so at times you'll hear the varying nature of the light background noise in this STEREO sound sample (meaning that you're hearing a STEREO needle playing the left and right channels from what is a MONO record). If you played this 78 with a standard 78RPM needle, I believe it would provide a much more accurate sound.
I should note that I DID NOT try any type of cleaning of this 78, and DID NOT even use any type of cloth or paper towel on it, and what you'll hear is this 83+ year old 78 just as I had carefully pulled it from the sleeve. The funny thing is that I found this Timely Tunes 78 in a rather large record collection that was found in an obviously very religious household, and it was mixed in with either Christian or Percy Faith-like easy listening records. It's odd that such a record would be found in this collection, but maybe that's why it was lightly played.
The orange and black labeled sides of this 78 are in very good plus condition with some whispy sleeve marks. Please take a look at the photos below of each side of the label to view the label condition. The halfsleeve is in good condition with curls/bends/creases at the corners, random tears around the edges especially at the top edge, and a missing piece at the top right corner, with NO seam splitting. This is a really RARE & COOL Frank Luther/Timely Tunes collectible, make sure you bid today!!!

My method for shipping a 78RPM record is by using 2 alternating pieces of cardboard on each side (grain going in different directions when stacked to add strength), and then wrapped in big bubblewrap with bubblepouches or added cardboard above and below the bubblewrapped and double thick cardboard packed 78. The overall box size is 13" W x 14" L x 6" H. I hope this helps provide you with an idea of the care I take in packing 78's.
