Occasionally Frank Sinatra would conduct the studio orchestra on another artist's session. Both Peggy Lee's THE MAN I LOVE and Dean Martin's SLEEP WARM feature Sinatra's surprisingly fluid baton work. But the conducting bug bit the singer early in his career. In 1944 Sinatra heard songwriter/composer Alec Wilder's "airs" for various solo instruments performed on the radio and was determined to commit them to disc.Exercising his considerable clout at Columbia Records, Sinatra arranged for a special recording session of six Wilder chamber pieces. Mitch Miller is the featured soloist on the opening "Air For Oboe" and the haunting "Air For English Horn." Other airs include one each for bassoon and flute respectively as well as the graceful "Slow Dance" and the closing fugue "Theme And Variations." These compositions are an utterly unpretentious and fresh-sounding blend of formal and popular music and should be better known, especially in the "classical" world. Sony is to be commended for making them available as part of its Collector Series. Also included are six charming Wilder Octets recorded by Mitch Miller and Co. in 1939, reminiscent of both Raymond Scott and Artie Shaw's Gramercy 5 in the use of swingin' harpsichord and humorous titles.

I will play grade on certain items only - it is just impossible for me to play grade everything I put on EBAY. MINT means factory sealed, never opened or played. NM is opened but in visually brand new, out-of-the-packaging clean condition. NM- is not NM! Its a grade above VG++ and below Near Mint - it does not imply perfect. In my terminology Scratches are feeler type and Scuffs are just cosmetic and usually inaudible.
