What's the story?..

'The Voice of Frank Sinatra is the first studio album by American singer Frank Sinatra, released on Columbia Records, catalogue C-112, March 4, 1946. It was first issued as a set of four 78 rpm records totaling eight songs, and went to #1 on the fledgling Billboard chart. It stayed at the top for seven weeks in 1946, spending a total of eighteen weeks on the charts. The album chart consisted of just a Top Five until August 1948.

The tracks were arranged and conducted by Axel Stordahl and his orchestra, on both dates consisting of a string quartet and four-piece rhythm section, augmented by flutist John Mayhew in July, and, ironically given the part he would play with Sinatra at Columbia in the early 1950s, oboist Mitch Miller in December. Sinatra would record most of these songs again at later stages in his career.

Certain critics have claimed The Voice to be the first concept album, and Frank Sinatra, with The Voice, inaugurated his practice of having a common mood, theme, or instrumentation tying the songs together on a specific release.'

I strive to grade fairly, and have never sold a record without listening to it first.

Visual grading is not an option at all.

This 68 year old 78 I have graded as being in Very Good condition. All 8 sides play through with no jumping, skipping or any other audio horrors.  

One disc has some light surface marks, but all discs have been carefully play-checked and tested and the marks that you see in picture 9 add no acoustic unpleasantness.

There is the expected low-level and generally non-intrusive surface noise, typically common to any used shellac discs of this vintage, and which shouldn't spoil your authentic listening experience!

A perfectly acceptable shellac-to-mp3 transfer, with a suitable turntable. Keep it real but in a digital way! 

The book-style sleeve I have graded being in Very Good condition with light scuffing to the edges, creases to the corners and light yellowing, 68 year vintage, to the white areas, plus other small signs of storage and age.

The labels are in good condition, with no major defects, see close-up pictures uploaded. In red and gold with Columbia music note and microphone detailing.

GRADING GUIDE FOR 78rpm DISCS

NM Nearly Mint, but has been played. No visible signs of wear or damage.

EX+ Plays like new, with few signs of handling. Minor scuffs visible.

EX Very shiny, nearly new looking. No visible signs of wear, inaudible scuffs and scratches.

VG++ Still shiny, but without the lustre of a new record. A few light scratches. Light wear. No skipping or sticking passages.

VG+ Above average, undeniably vintage condition 78 in which scuffs and general use have dulled the finish of the disc. Wear is moderate, but playback is not overly affected, and is free from distortion. Light surface noise, commensurate with age. No skipping or sticking passages.

VG Moderate, even wear throughout, still very playable. Surface noise and scratches, audible but not intrusive.

Good++ Quite playable still, distortion on playback due to surface noise. Music remains loud, in most passages, with scratches and surface noise evident but below music level.

Good+ Serviceable and acceptable playback. Music may sound muffled in some sections. Noticeably heavier scratches and surface marks.

Good Quite obviously worn and scratched, but music level is still higher than surface noise.

Good- Music still prominent, with wear and scratches extensive.

Fair Most of music remains audible over continual surface noise, although the vintage 78 experience is an uncomfortable affair. Collection filler material.

Poor Unplayable, and most definitely of interest only to the most dedicated...
