Brief Artist & Album Info: Zappa’s third ‘solo’ album after the controversial disbandment of the original Mothers of Invention. ‘Chunga’s Revenge’, with it’s famous ‘Yawning’ cover, introduced singers Flo and Eddie (ex-Turtles Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan, a duo who later sang backing vocals for T Rex). Also featuring several players from the previous solo album - the masterpiece which was ‘Hot Rats’ from 1969. This album, unfairly never one of his most acclaimed, but for me highly underrated, contains many gems and several classic instrumentals. The best being the title track which features Ian Underwood on electric sax that gets the full wah-wah treatment. The beautifully melodic and catchy jazzy track Twenty Small Cigars, actually an out-take from ‘Hot Rats’ and the glorious guitar-driven ‘Transylvania Boogie’ with it’s gypsy rhythms. ‘Road Ladies’ describes the pleasures (and consequences) from the groupies around at this time. A varied album and again never short of experimentation. Violin supremo, Sugarcane Harris, plays organ on the title track and Frank himself plays all the percussion on the Varese inspired piece ‘The Clap’. This a green covered RSLP original, the cover has some edge wear, but the main surfaces still impressive. The heavy-pressed record plays superbly with hardly anything to fault, never easy to find as such.

Cover Grade and Format: VERY GOOD(+): but actually looks better on the main areas. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces, this being the rarer more limited green coloured sleeve. Many RSLP originals were red, as were all subsequent Kinney copies. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press and includes the plain white inner sleeve.

Cover Front: “A gypsy mutant industrial vacuum cleaner dances about a mysterious night time camp fire. Festoons. Dozens of imported castanets, clutched by the horrible suction of its heavy duty hose, waving with marginal erotic abandon in the midnight autumn air”.

So states the front of one of Frank’s most famous covers with the huge yawn taken by Phil Franks. Not intentionally taken to be used on an album cover, but when Zappa saw the picture, he liked it and decided to use it. This is one that often wears badly: this front has far less wear than many I have seen, and there is no disputing the age of this rarer green printing. A little edge wear is just visible with some corner tip rubbing as well. But it retains fine colour, even freshness with any creasing fine and light, most confined to the edges. Minimal rubbing and no sticker tears or writing, any surface marks very fine and faint.

Cover Back: The deep purple artwork is incredibly hard to find without often heavy penetrating ringwear which this has almost entirely avoided. This unforgiving and difficult back is largely the same as the front with most wear near the edges (top and bottom).

Cover Inner Gatefold: Little to fault inside, the Cal Schenkel artwork looks fantastic.

Top Edges: Quite light to moderate patchy rubbing, but straight and flush.

Bottom Edges: Moderate or more full rubbing to both, but no splits and still neatly straight and flush.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with any thickening or burring tiny and light as seen viewed end-on. Record entered on the back edge and both guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: Quite solid, straight with minimal compression and folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. Patchy rubbing, a deeper scuff near the top, but most of the text is still present with just small clipping to some letters – all still easy to read however.

Corners: Moderate rubbing with fair to fine shape retained with no major knocks.

Cover Summary: With most wear confined to the edges, mostly the storage bottom ones, this is still a very respectable example of a difficult cover that is becoming increasingly more difficult to find in the green format. As seen, the main faces are still in very fine condition, lacking the usual ringwear and light fading issues many have. Not for purist collectors, but the record is impressive and the sound terrific. Many fans of the great entertainer will be happy.

Inner Sleeve: VERY GOOD(+): a plain solid white unlined inner with moderate ageing and neat edge splits, also a tiny tear on the top opening. Still neat, the lack of creasing is a significant plus.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT: arguably better. A very fine visual example with only main fine, quite wispy surface marks as seen under bright light. Clean with fine shine and quite heavily pressed on high quality vinyl. One of the better originals I have seen for a while and it plays with hardly anything unwanted, so a scarce first pressing to please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality album plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a full dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few copies, whenever pressed, will outperform this very early pressing I feel sure. Just a couple of super faint ticks were heard (just), but little else. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been mainly carefully handled. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. The disc itself will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

End Piece: The back cover explains the vocals on this album are a preview for the following album - 200 Motels, it was the start of a new chapter in Zappa’s career, many fans were not sure at first - the original Mothers of Invention were much loved by their fans. Many found it unforgivable to disband them although several members still recorded with the new line-ups. This album is was a pathway to the transition, and is an important stepping stone - if you missed this ‘solo’ album first time round, try it now, you are unlikely to hear a much cleaner pressing from a copy made in 1970.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
