Rarity: Moderately scarce in the US, this pressing quite rare elsewhere, and this copy includes the unique very large double-sided poster as-seen. This insert sheet was never included in UK copies of this album making this indispensible for Zappa fans and collectors. Also this copy is superbly pressed and plays beautifully, exceeding almost every UK copy I have heard to date. The original UK reprise versions rarely escape often considerable crackle, especially on that delicate quiet piano introduction to side two. This one appears hardly played and was an absolute delight to play-grade. The very wear-prone cover (that’s all countries versions), also in fine condition, this also includes the elusive Reprise company promotional inner sleeve, also in excellent condition.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Some of Zappa’s finest instrumentals are ‘Sandwiched’ inbetween two slices of doo-wop trivia: ‘WPLJ’ (wine, port and lemon juice, and ‘Valerie’. ‘Igor’s Boogie’ was written for Ignor Stravinsky, while ‘Holiday in Berlin’ was for the militant German students who had invaded the stage in October 1968, demanding that Zappa make an anti-capitalist statement (Zappa later said their leaders wanted him to tell the audience to burn down a nearby American forces base). ‘Aybe Sea’ was a tinkling piano piece that again relied on Ian Underwood’s sensitive touch. The centrepiece of this wonderful album is ‘The Little House I Used to Live In’, which occupies most of side two. Similar in structure to the Hot Rats album, with blistering solos from Sugarcane Harris’s electric violin and an awesome electric storm finale featuring a rare organ solo frenzy by Frank himself. After ‘Little House’ there is a short dialogue between Zappa and a member of the audience, this always intrigues me as you cannot really here clearly what the heckler is saying, but Frank’s lines are: “Everyone here is wearing a uniform, don’t kid yourself’’ and “You will hurt your throat, stop it’’ – the heckler shuts up. This copy includes a first issue American Bizarre label record that appears hardly played and offers superb sound with probably the least unwanted I have heard. The cover has far less wear than unsusual, especially for a vintage US example. The inclusion of the early Reprise inner sleeve and the elusive and unique American only huge poster insert makes this unmissable for fans and collectors. This insert was never included in any UK copy of this album and only reproduced in the Japan mini cover CDs relatively recently.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: and by American standard vintage thick card covers, arguably better. These are more often seen in very poor rubbed or split condition. An unlaminated gatefold format with quite smooth surfaces that have a gentle sheen. Printed and made in the United States, includes the Reprise graphic promotional inner sleeve and the large double-sided poster insert sheet.

Cover Front: To say this cover is prone to wear is something of an understatement, few escape often heavy rubbing, ring wear and edge splits. This front is highly impressive with little to even fault. Clean, fresh, unfaded with hardly a trace of creasing or blemishes. The bizarre artwork was intended for an Eric Dolphy album cover, but this was shelved. This will prove immensely difficult to find better.

Cover Back: The back has a little patchy rubbing, mostly light and traces of rim rubbing mostly near the bottom. But put in context, this is only very light for a cover that will rarely escape some. Overall, this back has survived the years very well.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Very impressive as-seen, the paste-on style panels have minimal trace of any rubbing and again will not prove easy to find better.

Top Edges: Both straight, flat and flush with no splits, any evidence of thinning tiny. Some mainly light patchy rubbing.

Bottom Edges: Similar again, rubbing is more moderate on these storage edges.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The front has a real edge which has little wear. Both entrance edges are clean, mostly sharp with very little thickening at all. These vintage American covers were made with thicker card than European sleeves. These are guaranteed untrimmed and all edges are naturally unsplit with no repairs or enhancements.

Spine and Text: Solid, thick and straight with no compression and folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. All text is perfect and unworn the main surface hardly rubbed or faded. A little fine rubbing to the lower fold in places, almost the very least to be expected.

Corners: Light to moderate tip rubbing with a rub/crease on the back lower left tip. Fine to very fine shape retained with no major knocks.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this very fragile early 1970’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. This attractive item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: with only relatively mild hint of age. This a very early Reprise promotional graphic unlined inner. Hardly creased with the edges fully intact with just a tiny neat repair by myself to the centre of the bottom edge to stop it widening in future – it barely even registers. Not seen this inner too many times, and never much better than this.

The Poster: PRACTICALLY MINT: this is large, opening to four times cover size width-wise. An elusive double-sided poster sheet that was not included in the UK (or elsewhere to my knowledge). Also this was not available long in the United States, only early copies included it. This is immaculate and unmounted (e.g. no pin-holes or tape marks). An integral part of this album, its non-inclusion for UK copies was bad marketing in my opinion. This is guaranteed original and its totally blows away its vast age, this will never prove easy to find to find like this.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: arguably better, Bizarre records were not always the cleanest looking records, but their sound is usually fantastic – as is this copy. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and quite solidly pressed – again, Bizarre records were not heavily pressed, but pressing standards were usually impressive. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface marks, light with no penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, little shows. Mainly surface scuffs only which imported records seldom escape, they are totally harmless. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This arguably lesser-lauded Zappa/Mothers album plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Being a predominately instrumental like ‘Hot Rats’, it fits nicely between that classic album and the mostly live ‘Weasel’s Ripped My Flesh’, this includes studio and live material and is superbly recorded. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed, even on that critical delicate opening piano on side two, overall, an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few available copies will outperform this early US pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
