Label Conditions: Both labels are in truly stunning conditions and even retain that rare slightly glossy sheen that only the most unhandled copies ever can. Incredibly fresh, clean and attractive with hardly a spindle trace to be seen. Again I had to compare this with my own personal copy and this, at the very least, matches it. The really important factor for this album is sound quality, and I truly do regard this as one of the most difficult Zappa albums. Pressing quality is often an issue – and I have had a number of these over the years – and so many crackle really badly and often have invisible, but very audible pressing noises. This copy plays very well indeed with barely anything unwanted, even that difficult piano introduction to side two has minimal surface sound. So the labels looks practically new as do the playing surfaces, and even the very wear-prone cover looks very impressive as well. A keeper copy for a difficult set.

Weight of this Record: 140 grams. Like pressing quality, this album also varies considerably in weight. This being one of the heavier ones I have had for some time. I have had copies on this first issue label much lighter than this, and very few heavier.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Original Year of Release: 1970.

Rarity: The original first pressing on the tri-coloured Reprise label is scarce. It proved to be the final Zappa album issued on this label and was quite a late one on this format. Both ‘Chunga’s Revenge’ and ‘Weasel’s Ripped My Flesh’ albums both appeared in 1970 with RSLP prefixes, but they went immediately to the new tan format design. Better pressed examples are hard to find and also this album is very intolerant of heavy-tracking on basic record players from the past. Lots of electric violin and complex instrumentals mean more difficult tracking and so many are seen scratched and the sound ruined with groove wear and damage causing clipping and distortion. Lastly, the cover. This always wears badly, especially the back that is often rife with deep penetrating ringwear and rarely seen with little.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Some of Zappa’s finest instrumentals are ‘Sandwiched’ inbetween two slices of doo-wop trivia: ‘WPLJ’ (wine, port and lemon juice, and ‘Valerie’. ‘Igor’s Boogie’ was written for Stravinsky, while ‘Holiday in Berlin’ was for the militant German students who had invaded the stage in October 1968, demanding that Zappa make an anti-capitalist statement (Zappa later said their leaders wanted him to tell the audience to burn down a nearby American forces base). ‘Aybe Sea’ was a tinkling piano piece that again relied on Ian Underwood’s sensitive touch. The centrepiece of this wonderful album is ‘The Little House I Used to Live In’, which occupies most of side two. It’s similar in structure to the Hot Rats album, with blistering solos from Sugarcane Harris’s electric violin - an awesome electric storm - and the finale is an organ solo frenzy by Frank himself. After ‘Little House’ there is a short dialogue between Zappa and a member of the audience, this always intrigues me as you cannot really here clearly what the heckler is saying, but Frank’s lines are: “Everyone here is wearing a uniform, don’t kid yourself’’ and “You will hurt your throat, stop it’’ - the heckler shuts up. This is a very impressive all-round copy, and importantly, offers very clean sound with little unwanted. The cover had far less wear than most with amongst the least back ring wear I have seen. My own one has none, but took me over 50 years to find. This a lovely copy most Zappa fans will enjoy.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: and in terms of this one, arguably worthy of a (+). An unlaminated, gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse and has the original ‘Patents Pending’ text.

Cover Front: Very colourful and bizarrely strange, this retains rich colour with no fading with barely any creasing or wear. The odd small corner tip rub and being made with such thin card, this is very intolerant of bad storage or rough handling – clearly, this one has faired very well indeed.

Cover Back: Impossibly difficult, this has only minor and light blemishes, most of which are only seen under angled light. Just the faintest rim impression and minor hints of ring wear near the top and bottom – few will ever have less. One crease near the top edge and a few light surface marks that are hardly even seen viewed normally. A very intolerant back in quite impressive condition.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The odd tiny corner tip crease apart, beautiful condition and devoid of any wear or ageing.

Top Edges: Any rub traces are fine, light and very patchy, both very straight.

Bottom Edges: Mainly light patchy rubbing, nearer moderate towards back right corner.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with little wear. Any thickening or burring quite mild seen viewed end-on. Record enters on the back edge, both guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: A very fine spine that was made much thicker than the subsequent Kinney reprintings. Solid and straight with a little compression and mild natural creasing from opening. This one folded square so the edges meet up almost flush and near parallel. All text (and there is plenty of it) shows minimal wear with any clipping or rubs to the letters small and quite few as seen on my close-up pictures.

Corners: The spine pair area still neat with little wear. The right tips have light to a little below moderate rubbing. Fine to very fine shape retained.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this very wear-prone early 70’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. This visually pleasing item should please many collectors – nothing to hide, the difficult back is seen for what it is – clean with barely any hint of ring wear. Note: the UK versions of this album never included any insert.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): a plain white, unlined inner that has aged little. Solid with barely any creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): and as close to Mint(-) as they get. One fine hairline stopped me grading as such. A superb visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A hardly even played record with any surface traces tiny, very few and super-faint as seen under bright angled light. Visually a super record that should please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This very first pressed example plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. A difficult album at times with some very quiet passages and some dynamic loud ones as well. It offers strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - audio quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal, very few and faint and no pops or significant ticks were noted. This has massive highs and lows in frequency range: from the lower bass notes of the organ finale to Harris’s screeching electric violin, always a very difficult instrument to track and maintain. This plays with no clipping or break-up at all, all is very sharp and focused throughout. Same goes for the solo piano parts, these again are very crisp. This album is predominately instrumental and hardly played, of that, I have no doubt – no damaging old stylus have stripped or worn these complex grooves. Few copies will match, let alone outperform this near ultimate pressing I feel sure. Indeed this would be going nowhere if I not had a copy of this quality myself already, again it took a long time to find that too. The quiet and delicate piano intro to side two also plays very well with litte unwanted. I have heard so many that have loud crackle and even distortion. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, I have all too rarely heard the gentle piano intro on side two play this quiet, this is very difficult indeed as fans will already know. This record will prove very difficult to find better and merits strong recommendation.

End Piece: My regular buyers will already know my love of Zappa’s music and this is up there with the best. I only offer strong copies of his albums, ‘Mother People’ only deserve the best and this is certainly a fine copy – the record exceptional. A notoriously difficult title to find clean – that’s both cover and record – not one to be missed.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
