Label/Format/Conditions: Bizarre with matt, smooth surfaces, side one has the ‘400 Days of the Year’ track title error. All four are little short of immaculate, clean and fresh. Any of the tiny few spindle traces ultra fine and faint. This set appears hardly played and plays with stunning clean sound throughout. NOTE: side one backs side four.

Weight of Records: 117 / 119 grams. Typical quite light records made in the United States. But both discs are immaculately pressed and offer fantastic clean sound all duration.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Rarity: First issue American copies are quite scarce. Initially issued with a huge cover sticker promoting the band and a 12 page book (also included). These were quickly dropped and repressings were on Reprise. UK copies only available relatively briefly on Transatlantic records with no official book. There was a UK book made available at select gigs, only the cover is the same, the inside pictures are all different, this is rare and seldom seen.

Brief Artist & Album Info: In terms of ‘progressive’ music, they don’t come much more progressive than this awesome double album. One of the great Zappa albums, this a superb first-issue American copy. An amazing blend of rock, psychedelia and free-jazz and very experimental. The use of early electronics and treatments of voices and traditional musical instruments almost unprecedented for the time. This was the Mothers of Invention with eleven members, it introduces Ruth Komanoff (later Mrs Ian Underwood), a very talented classically-trained percussionist who really understood Zappa’s complex music, she plays the distinctive marimba and other vibes on this remarkable set. Zappa was still printing Edgard Varèse’s quote on his albums – ‘The present day composer refuses to die!’ – but so far his talent for outrage had arguably obscured his skills as a composer. Uncle Meat aimed to put that right, a double release that down-played lyrics. ‘Basically this is an instrumental album’, it states inside the gatefold. A note described the technique of overdubbing, which was used extensively, opening up the weird world of virtual orchestration. Along with Komanoff, the other new recruit, Arthur Tripp was added on percussion with Jimmy Carl Black. They helped Zappa realise some of his fiendish metrical ingenuities. Ian Underwood played harpsichord with a jangling, absurdist quality that infuses all the music. Uncle Meat eventually became a great favourite in Europe, and almost single-handedly gave birth to the genre of ‘Art Rock’. The music was to be used in the movie of the same name, but never got actually finished until much later (the money ran out). This is Zappa at the very peak of creativity, predominately instrumental, but not all, it includes classic live performances taken from tours in the US and UK. ‘Louie Louie’ features Don Preston on the ‘mighty Royal Albert Hall Pipe Organ’ and the band also demolish ‘God Bless America’ (an equivalent statement to the distortions Hendrix was applying to the ‘Star Spangled Banner’). Pamela Zarubica (a one time house-mate) appeared as the ‘Voice of the Cheese’ – Zappa takes the listener from domestic intimacy to rock-venue spectacle in breathtaking lurches. Every track is interesting in it’s complexity either vocally, or more so instrumentally. Zappa’s solo on ‘Nine Type of Industrial Pollution’ inspired many guitarists in the future with it’s strange chord structures and sound. ‘The Air’ had lyrics about customs searches and tape recordings and ‘If We’d all Been Living in California’ is a conversation between Jimmy Carl Black and Zappa about why the Mothers were not making more money being on the road and being near destitute. The album’s piece-de-resistance and long-standing favourite is Side D taken up by one of Zappa’s greatest compositions. ‘King Kong’, is a six section instrumental featuring some blistering solos from Underwood on electric alto saxophone, Motorhead on a deranged baritone sax, and best of all Bunk Gardner’s solo. Many assume this is a treated electric saxophone solo, but not so. The amazing sounds are created on an electric clarinet – you have never heard nothing like this before – the reed’s spit and rasp and create a sound possibly unique to this amazing album. The instrument is almost blown to destruction, this is Gardner’s tour de force and his finest moment with the Mothers. The large band is in overdrive on ‘Kong Kong’ and sounds created are astonishing. The prelude to King Kong on side B is pretty amazing too, a vast free-form jazz rock instrumental – this is the band blowing at their best. For any Zappa fan who has not heard this amazing journey into free jazz rock and weird creativity, this has to be experienced, but this could prove challenging for those not into more difficult music. If it proved to weird for you back in the late 1960s, give it another try today, the best records take time to fully appreciate and this is more than worthy of perseverance. Regarding this man’s work – this is truly one of the very best ever, this hardly played American original does it maximum justice – and includes the scarce book. Weird? oh yes, and proudly so – enjoy!

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): an unlaminated gatefold format with matt surfaces that have a gentle hint of texturing. The inside has the paste-on panels favoured by the Americans at this time. Printed and made in the United States, includes the huge red and white promotional sticker, the 16-page book and also the Zappa/Herb Cohen graphic inner sleeves.

Cover Front: This is a cover rarely seen without significant wear and damage – that being the American or UK version. Firstly the sticker, this is superb, clearly never removed or picked at, it has perfect edges. Unrubbed and very clean indeed, a hint of toning seen on the white letter which is purely a natural trait of age, this sticker will prove near impossible to find better. The actual front is also very impressive, clean, fresh and ‘attractive’, the artwork clearly not pretty, but barely worn at all. Any hint of rubbing minuscule and no ring wear this side. Just a small tip crease on the bottom right, nothing else. Deep colour retained with no fading or sticker issues, this sets a very high standard and will prove hard to beat.

Cover Back: The back is largely the same with just a little gentle rim arc rubbing in places, this is probably as light as it ever gets on a cover that is immensely prone to all forms of wear. Both back and front are near exceptional.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The inside is superb again, the odd tiny corner tip rub trace, but little else to fault at all as-seen.

Top & Bottom Edges: All edges are straight, flat and parallel. All edges have avoided splits, that more unusual on American covers that are naturally brittle and prone to this. Just a tiny nick on the top back which is almost microscopic in size, these have largely avoided rubbing. The bottom pair have a little light patchy rubbing mostly near the right end. In terms of these storage edges, these have fared well.

Right Edge(s), and Type: These entrance edges have remained in impressive condition with minimal hint of wear or thickening. The cover typically made with thicker paper than European covers, both are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: A superb spine, this perilous area rarely seen like this. Solid, robust, straight and again, unsplit. Also folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel – not always the case. Any rubbing to the surface minimal, barely any at all with practically all text strong and intact, even the folds have avoided it. No light fading or grubbiness, this perilous area is exceptional.

Corners: Any tip rubs are small and light, and largely avoided by most, one very small tip crease as mentioned on the bottom front right. Excellent or better shape retained by the others with no knocks, just the smallest dink on the lower right.

Cover Summary: One of the finest, least worn original American stickered examples I have seen, at least the equal of my own. It has high upgrade potential for many Zappa fans. With most of any wear confined to the lower edges, and even this very light indeed, this attractive and still fresh cover will please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeves: EXCELLENT(++): just finding these ‘Bizarre’ Frank Zappa/Herb Cohen unlined inner sleeves (not included with UK records) without splits is a rarity – here, all six edges are fully intact with NO repairs. Both are nigh-on identical: clean, fresh, no rubbing and minimal light creasing. The top openings are crisp and immaculate, the surfaces unaged or ring worn. One of the text blocks states the intention of this label, it reads:

“We make records that are a little different. We present musical and sociological material which the important record companies would probably not allow you to hear. Just what the world needs… another record company”.

Bizarre Records (America) and Straight (mostly UK) were founded by Zappa to promote artists that would have found any major label deal difficult to impossible. Briefly available and defunct around the 1970s.

The Book: NEAR MINT: this is the original fully endorsed 12-page original book that was included briefly in the American first issue album. An integral and crucial part of the album, it was not available for long. As seen, this book is practically as made, the pages held together by the original two staples which remain strong and unloosened. The only tarnishing seen on these in the book middle. All pages are little short of immaculate, clean and uncreased with scant to no evidence of being handled or aged. A superb book to make this Zappa classic album truly complete.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Grading this visually overall is less easy. So I will describe each side. Side one has numerous surface marks, mostly fine, these ignored and have no sound*. Side four which backs side one has barely anything at all. Side two has one surface mark at the very beginning, again it does nothing, few other blemishes at all. Side three has hardly anything, any surface traces fine, very few and faint. The most important factor, all four sides plays with fantastic clean sound with hardly anything unwanted at all. An average visual grading of EXCELLENT I think is fair, but I am certain these records have hardly been played with three of the fours sides almost exceptional for an imported record this great age. American records tend to mark more easily, three sides look superb, just side one stops a higher overall grading.

The records are clean with superb shine and fairly solidly pressed on very pure, high quality vinyl. Be under no illusion: most who bought this album back in 1969 were not hi-fi connoisseurs, but of certain types who experimented with the more ‘Out There’ music of the time, hence few of these survive in really top conditions. Even with surface marks on side one, it plays as impressively as all the others with no clicks or issues noted. The pressing quality is superb and the audio quality immense. The production and engineering on this double set is at times stunning – that will be apparent as soon as the stylus makes contact with the first track. I will say, if I did not own a copy of similar quality myself, this superb album would not be going anywhere. Finding this American original album with better audio quality will prove very difficult indeed and most will treasure it – as I did.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: Both records play above their high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. They offer strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is simply brilliant with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. The dynamics, separation and full-on sound of the studio material especially is first-class, it will blow away all other versions, the CD versions hardly even compare. I have often found the UK Transatlantic pressings less reliable for pressing quality, but no such issues with this first Bizarre US pressing*. This was a genuine pleasure to play-grade, this appearing well stored and mainly carefully handled and little used. Few available copies will match or outperform this. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading these records, it’s always a thrill for me to hear this album via the analogue format. A difficult set for the cover and records, and with sound this clean, a superb example that most collectors will treasure. The inclusion of a near mint book and superb fully intact inner sleeves are the icing on the cake, and for sound, it was a genuine delight. Strongly recommended for FZ fans and those for an ear to listen to alternative music – this was one of Frank’s most creative and complex works.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
