Frank Zappa was frequently targeted by bootleg producers in the 1970s and 1980s; this two-record set originated at a 1980 Rotterdam concert and sounds like it originated from a broadcast or second generation soundboard tape, though it seems very slightly muffled. Like many of his bands of this period, Zappa leads a sextet that seems very tightly rehearsed. The opener is a potent version of "Chunga's Revenge," seguing into one song after another until breaking for the encore. There are problems with the release; for example, "Teenage Wind" is misidentified as "Bamboozled by Love" and "Dancin' Fool" is inexplicably cut in two, with the finale preceding "Bobby Brown" and the bulk of the piece at the end of the final side (a mastering error and not the way the band played it). The funniest track is "Ms. Pinky," Zappa's spoof of a "lonely person device," which really isn't played very crisply until the piece wraps with an up-tempo chorus of the old TV theme from I Love Lucy, producing a huge ovation as the music finally stops to prepare for the encores. Among them are "I Don't Wanna Get Drafted" (heard just prior to its official release as a single) and the hilarious "Illinois Enema Bandit." Although this bootleg has better sound then most of its competition, it will not take the place of the commercial versions of its contents -- but it is warmly recommended to serious Zappa fans.
