Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with rich deep tan colour as only the originals had. Any spindle marks are very few, ultra fine and faint as seen with close angled viewing.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 130 grams. A very good solid weight for this one.

Rarity: Moderately scarce as a first pressing, like most from his catalogue, this failed to chart with just steady sales through the 1970s as more discovered this man’s music.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Still wheelchair-bound, Zappa took his musicians into Paramount Studios. On the 17-minute ‘Big Swifty’, overdubbing allowed Zappa to turn a sextet into a virtual big band. Aynsley Dunbar’s drumming supplied perfect fluency, aided by Alex Dmochowski, his English bassist (playing under the name ‘Erroneous’). The closing theme was a Zappa guitar solo transcribed by trumpeter Sal Marquez and arranged for brass. Electric instrumental soloing over a rock beat invited comparisons to Miles Davis and John McLaughlin, but there is an ironical twist to the tunes that makes the music undeniably Zappaesque. George Duke’s splendid keyboards and Sal Marquez’s muted-trumpet also have a humorous quality. Whereas contemporary jazz rock was reaching out to the cosmos, Zappa kept everything low-key and amusing. “Your Mouth’ is a tale of psychotic male jealously (‘you might loose a bunch of teeth...my shot gun...just might want to blow you away’), but sung in a deceptively light style (and with a killer country slide-guitar solo by Tony Duran). ‘It Just might be a One-shot Deal’ describes someone hallucinating and advises them to dig it ‘while it’s happening’. Jeff Simmons, who had recorded a brilliant album of psychedelic balladry for Zappa’s Straight label - Lucille Has Messed My Mind Up, and plays Hawaiian guitar. Although a commercial non-starter, Waka is a great favourite among jazz and jazz-rock fans who are open-minded enough to give Zappa a listen. This more than merits it’s ‘Hot Rats II’ status and the two long instruments are simply superb. It paved the way for the even bigger Grand Wazoo project that followed and this era of heavy jazz-rock and solo workouts is one of my favourite Zappa periods. Waja/Jawaka is probably still one of Zappa’s most under-appreciated works, and that should never be. It had some blistering solos by Marquez, Don Preston on Moog and, of course, Zappa himself. Dunbar’s drumming is fantastic throughout and with his time in the band, rarely sounded better. The title song especially is magnificent and performs a magnificent prelude to ‘The Grand Wazoo’, still one of my favourite FZ albums (also on offer in practically Mint condition). This a lovely original with a clean cover and great sound with little unwanted.

Cover Condition and Details: EXCELLENT(+): a single unlaminated format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made by MacNeill.

Cover Front: Only really marked down for that extra (+) for a fairly light surface crease near the bottom left corner area and a small one opposite. This is very clean, fresh and highly attractive with barely any ageing at all. Rub-free with no ring wear or grubbiness, this never easy.

Cover Back: Absolutely superb and even better than the front, again no ring wear which is little short of remarkable. Indeed this back actually exceeds my own personal copy and up there with the very best I have seen for years.

Top Edge: Very straight with no wear at all.

Bottom Edge: Same again with just a small rub on the right corner.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, very sharp with barely any wear, the odd tiny burr trace being ultra critical viewed end-on and guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: A magnificent spine that comes as close to as made as they get. Solid, straight with barely any compression and very with too. All text is pristine perfect and totally unworn and as clear as when made, hopefully my close-up pictures do this justice.

Corners: A rub on the bottom right, the other three magnificent as made with excellent to near mint shape retained.

Cover Summary: A very attractive all round example of this somewhat wear-prone 70’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. So many of these are in poor or disappointing conditions, but this is not one of them. This strong item should please many, if not collectors. The reasonably gentle creasing as mentioned on the front, the only issue for the highly discerning. The original unlined white inner is also included in excellent condition. No edge splits and minimal creasing or ageing.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: very clean with fine shine, weight and freshness, any surface marks are very few, fine and faint as seen under bright angled light. A copy very lightly played only and an original that should please many, if not most collectors again.

I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This record plays even above it’s execellent grading with barely anything to fault. It has always been one of Frank’s most underrated albums which is a shame, it has musicianship of the highest quality and Dunbar’s drumming was never better than on this fine album. The sound is very clean and totally distortion-free and there is no sound degrading at all. A real expanded jazz-rock workout similar to Hot Rats and The Mothers art-rock masterpiece The Grand Wazoo. It remains melodic and even catchy, the two main long tracks are simply superb with wonderful soloing and beautiful percussion from Dunbar. Just the odd faint tick and minimal traces of any surface sound, this a difficult and complex album and this comes very close to matching my own personal copy. One that merits strong recommendation.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
