We're Only In It For The Money
ORIGINAL UK VERVE (SVLP 9199) FIRST STEREO PRESSING (October 1968) OF FRANK ZAPPA AND THE MOTHERS' WICKED DISMANTLING OF THE HIPPY DREAM, "We're Only In It For The Money" WHICH EVEN THOUGH WELL PLAYED, STILL SOUNDS ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL (ON MY SYSTEM - AT A LOUD VOLUME!) AND DELIVERS PRACTICALLY FLAWLESS PLAYBACK THROUGHOUT WITH A CRYSTAL CLEAR, DEEP, RICH AND WARM SOUND
PRESSED ON QUALITY HEAVYWEIGHT VINYL WITH THE FIRST BLACK/SILVER VERVE LABELS WITH "SOLD IN THE UK..." STATEMENT AND EMBOSSED 'KT' TAX CODE ON SIDE ONE
FIRST ISSUE MATRICES: V6 5045 A-1 / V6 5045 B-1

THE RECORD IS HOUSED IN THE ORIGINAL FRONT LAMINATED INTERNAL FLIPBACK GATEFOLD SLEEVE "Printed and made by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd."
COMPLETE WITH THE ORIGINAL (UNLINED) PLAIN WHITE DIE-CUT INNER SLEEVE
From the beginning, Frank Zappa cultivated a role as voice of the freaks — imaginative outsiders who didn't fit comfortably into any group.
We're Only in It for the Money is the ultimate expression of that sensibility, a satirical masterpiece that simultaneously skewered the hippies and the straights as prisoners of the same narrow-minded, superficial phoniness.
Zappa's barbs were vicious and perceptive, and not just humorously so: his seemingly paranoid vision of authoritarian violence against the counter-culture was borne out two years later by the Kent State killings.
Like Freak Out, We're Only in It for the Money essentially devotes its first half to satire, and its second half to presenting alternatives.
Despite some specific references, the first-half suite is still wickedly funny, since its targets remain immediately recognisable.
The second half shows where his sympathies lie, with character sketches of Zappa's real-life freak acquaintances, a carefree utopia in "Take Your Clothes Off When You Dance," and the strident, un-ironic protest "Mother People."
Regardless of how dark the subject matter, there's a pervasively surreal, whimsical flavour to the music, sort of like Sgt. Pepper as a creepy nightmare.
Some of the instruments and most of the vocals have been manipulated to produce odd textures and cartoonish voices; most songs are abbreviated, segue into others through edited snippets of music and dialogue, or are broken into fragments by more snippets, consistently interrupting the album's continuity.
Compositionally, though, the music reveals itself as exceptionally strong, and Zappa's politics and satirical instinct have rarely been so focused and relevant, making We're Only in It for the Money quite probably his greatest achievement.
LABELS: EXCELLENT Clean and unmarked with moderate/heavy spindle markings. This copy has been well played but also extremely well cared for as is evident from the unmarked surfaces and the sensational playback it delivers (please see detailed audio assessment below)
VINYL Visual: EXCELLENT+ The vinyl surfaces still retain their original deep, glossy sheen and are practically unmarked - there are some (very) light brush marks but these have no audio consequence whatsoever
VINYL Audio: Sounds sensational and plays beautifully with warm and vibrant audio reproduction and an impressive crystal clear loud STEREO cut. On playback at a loud volume (which is how I always listen to my LPs prior to listing, and it's always an immense pleasure to return to this wonderful LP) there are no scratches, no sticks or jumps, no clicks/pops and no real surface noise present. The sound quality is exceptional throughout and the whole LP plays to an extremely high standard with all frequencies bright and clear, no groove-wear, no distortion, sounds great and is critically graded EXCELLENT+ for audio (it's practically flawless) - this is a fantastic sounding copy of this wonderful album and even though it's obviously been frequently enjoyed over the years I would say only on a high end audio system
SLEEVE: The G&L laminated, internal flipback, Sgt. Pepper spoof cover is in great condition. The edges are crisp and square with very little storage wear and the spine displays all text clear and bold with just a little laminate lift - nothing major. The surfaces have a beautiful deep, glass-like gloss to both the outside but especially the inside, with just a little record impression but no ring. There is a little laminate loss to the internal flipback - on the lyric half of the inside (please see close-up photos) - but again, nothing major. Overall an EXCELLENT example
