Brief Artist & Album Info: This is THE album that changed my music life. I bought a copy of this as a 14-year-old in Clacton, Essex just after it came out – an older friend recommended me to Zappa, so I simply bought the album with the most interesting cover at the time. Well the content of this was so outrageous and different I was immediately hooked and started collecting all the previous albums working backwards. This is Zappa and The Mothers (as they were known at the time), the Flo & Eddie era at the height of his ‘satire period’. A live album recorded in 1971 at Pauley Pavilion in LA, it’s bawdy and hilarious, and above all else, original. Side one, ‘Billy the Mountain’ that occupies all side one and clocking in at 24.42 has to be one of the most bizarre live tracks ever put to record. Loosely, it tells a story of a live, mobile mountain who talks, with a Ethyl, a tree growing off his shoulder (Billy’s wife). Billy gets called up for the army – he evades the draft and starts rampaging all over America causing untold destruction. America has to act, so a fantastic new super-hero is called in to reason with him. This is Studebacher Hoch, a man who uses trained flies to transport him around with the aid of a telephone booth (this has to be heard to be believed). Billy is confronted by the fantastic new super-hero, however he looses his footing and ruptures himself – the moral of the story - don’t **** around with a mountain (as sung as a repetitive catchy chorus as the side ends). Side two features four Zappa live classics, two are brand new. ‘Eddie are you Kidding’ and what has to be one of Zappa’s most controversial songs ever – and he wrote quite a few. ‘Magdalena’, a true story of a Canadian girl who had left home because she had been abused by her father. Howard Kaylan’s talk-over – voicing the desperation and confusion of her ‘straight’ father – is equally shocking four decades later. The father’s sad fantasies replay the satire of Nabokov’s Lolita. This is an amazing album, Zappa’s second live set following the groupie fun of Fillmore East. Not to everyone’s taste and I feel it’s still an underrated set and period in Zappa’s vast catalogue. The main vocal parts are provided by Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan, ex-Turtles and famed backing singers, it proved to be the last featuring them on a new Zappa album. Also featuring legendary blues drummer Aynsley Dunbar. It was issued at the time when Frank was recovering from the assault at the Rainbow theatre when he was pushed off the stage. He sustained a skull fracture, twisted neck and broken wrist and leg, even a paralysed arm and was wheelchair-bound for a year. Not a big seller, even for a time when his music had been discovered more. This copy on offer is a nice one, a very strong little worn cover and a record that plays well with only a few minor blemishes. With much on the first side with sparse instrumentation, the odd sporadic or two is so difficult to avoid totally. I have this album to thank for getting me into this man’s wonderful music all those years ago – something that remains – even stronger to this present day.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: and arguably better. An unlaminated gatefold format with the original matt and smooth finish – this crucial for a proper first issue. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press and includes the plain white inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Minimal wear to this colourful front, the main issue is a narrow fade on the top left, this tapers away to nothing at half distance across. Hardly creased with any marks or blemishes very few and light, this is a splendid looking front with no sticker issues.

Cover Back: The back is superb with hardly anything of real note to fault, any rub traces or creasing bordering on minuscule, the lack of ring wear a major plus, not seen this back much better ever.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Both faces are little short of as-made and immaculate, the man slumped over the desk is the covers graphic artist Carl Schenkel.

Top Edges: Both edges are very straight, close to flush with hardly any hint of rubbing. The front left possibly a little faded by natural light.

Bottom Edges: A little light rubbing to the back on the right side, little else to fault.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The front edge is straight with barely any wear. Any thickening to the back opening edges is little and light as seen viewed end-on. All are guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: An impressive spine that had no fading and all the surface graphic and text little short of perfect. Solid, straight with minimal traces of compression, folded square, so all edges meet up very closely together and near parallel. For good measure, all the text is perfectly centred as-seen.

Corners: The spine spine have barely anything to fault in terms of rubbing and shape. Any rubbing to the right ones is mainly very small and light, excellent or better shape retained with no knocks.

Cover Summary: The modest light fade apart, this is a very impressive example of this wear-prone matt cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. Be aware, those with shiny surfaces are definitely later ones, the earlier ones must be matt. This still a very attractive item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: a basic plain solid white unlined inner. Very little creasing and any discolouration gentle and light, all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: clean with fine shine and solidly pressed, any gentle dulling purely within the pressing as seen under light. Any surface marks are ultra fine and faint, again seen critically under bright light, this record appears very little played. Visually a super record that should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I?offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: A classic Flo & Eddie era live album that carries on the bawdy humour of ‘Fillmore East’ (also on offer amongst a host of others). This quite challenging album plays very well overall, side two especially with hardly anything to fault. The epic ‘Billy the Mountain’ that occupies all of side one, has dialogue and some very quiet passages, so the odd sporadic click here-and-there is very difficult to avoid overall. A partial rev pressing sound is heard near the beginning, but that a one-off blemish in that respect. Overall, this offers strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is high with a full dynamic range and detailed sound. Any surface sound little and very light and no tracking issues*. Few available copies will better this significantly I feel sure. Always a difficult album for vinyl with material like this – side two is far louder and more ‘rock’ music orientated, as stated, with side has little to fault at all. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Little spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, the odd blemish here-and-there on side one is almost expected being honest. One to please many collectors, but not quite for the purists or those who want absolute perfection at any cost.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
