Brief Artist & Album Info: I remember clearly to this day, visiting my local music shop in Halstead town centre in my school dinner hour just to get this new Mothers album which I had pre-ordered – they did not stock albums like this. It came as no great surprise to hear a new band play a very different kind of music, predictable Frank wasn’t. This began the famed ‘Discreet’ era. Over time it has become a Zappa classic and one the most popular within his vast catalogue. It did particularly well in his native US where it remained in the charts for best part of a year. The cover, easily one of the most risque ever made, gives clues to the contents inside. The Songs were somewhat lewd and crazy, delivered with rampaging intensity and recorded with hair-raising clarity. The cover was custom-made to follow Zappa’s instructions and was created by the very talented David McMacken, the air-brush artist who had designed the 200 Motels poster and album cover. This certainly pushed new boundaries and remains controversial. This album, the first Zappa and his band made on the new Discreet label, is a classic. A brilliant band and some of the finest musicians to have the ‘Mothers’ name. The line-up seen above and what fantastic music they made. Brilliant jazz-tinged rock numbers, with some blistering solos and most with great toe-tapping melody and top-quality hi-fi sound. Over-Nite Sensation is always remembered most for one song in particular: ‘Dinah Moe Humm’ a typically bizarre Zappa sexual encounter that I cannot detail here, but this infamous song even today still amuses – radio material this isn’t – it became a live favourite. Even if the early Mothers were too extreme for some, this particular band and album won over more listeners, a new found, slightly more commercial record that many regard as their favourite Zappa era. This was the beginning of a new phase for his career, the following albums Apostrophe and Live at the Roxy were quite popular and sales began to rise. This very clean copy should please his loyal fans and not a bad place to begin a collection of his music.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: and arguably better. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces, this has the original red ‘DISCREET’ logo on the front. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press, includes the plain white inner sleeve.

Cover Front and Back: Brilliant artwork with minimal traces of any rubbing and no sticker issues (or which this is intolerant. A few quite fine spine edge creases, but hardly any elsewhere, there is a fine sliver of fading on the front top edge, light exposure over time can do this and hardly uncommon, here very little near the left corner. Any rim impression on the back is gentle and light with no ink loss or ring wear. Any surface marks to either side fine, very few and faint, both sides remain impressive and fresh with deep colour as-seen.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Practically as made, very impressive and unaged.

Top & Bottom Edges: All remain straight with hardly any traces of rubbing.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, and mostly sharp with little wear, the odd minor tiny chip trace on the actual ends being very critical, no trimming, the front is closed, so the record enters on the back edge.

Spine and Text: A very sine spine that is more often seen rubbed and worn. Solid, straight with minimal compression. Also folded square, so the edges meet up flush and parallel. All text is unworn and the surface graphic practically the same.

Corners: Small tip rubs with very fine or better shape retained with no knocks.

Cover Summary: A very fine all round example of this wear-prone 1970’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. This was often seen with huge stickers on the front that obscured a lot of the artwork, and they are near impossible to remove. This is a graphic fans do not want to hide and this strong item should please many collectors. The plain white unlined inner is included in Excellent(+) condition. Clean with no splits, the paper with minimal darkening with only gentle traces near the sides.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): very clean with lovely shine and solidly pressed. A copy played little, the lack of spindle marks is always a good indictor but not definitive, but both playing surfaces show minimal surface traces and the sound is very impressive with little unwanted. Visually a super record that should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I?offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This magnificent first album on Discreet, plays up to, an most even beyond it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few available first-issue copies will outperform this significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
