Label and Condition: Discreet, matt, smooth surfaces – genuine original with the very rare ‘Punky’s Whips’ listed on side one which the album plays. Second censored examples omitted this song, thus ‘Big Leg Emma’ was moved to side one to full a large ‘gap’, making the side two label unique and different as well.

Label Conditions: All four in superb condition: very clean, fresh and attractive with only one or two light spindle marks seen under light. All evidence suggests this set has hardly been played.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of Records: 110 / 122 grams. Discreet records were inconsistent on weight and most were pressed light – but vinyl purity was always high.

Rarity: RARE: and make no mistake about it. I actually consider this one of the rarest UK Zappa albums ever made. But that only as an absolute first issue with ‘Punky’s Whips’ on record label, cover and playing the song. This was withdrawn almost immediately (reputedly on the very first day it hit the shops) and repressed minus the song with no extras filling the gap making for a ten minute shorter version. When repressed, the song ‘Big Leg Emma’ was promoted to side one so that side was not embarrasingly short. So originals have a unique side two label as well as it includes ‘Big Leg Emma’. So the running order of the repressings is different as well. Not only that, the first song ‘Titties and Beer’ is completely uncensored with an extra line with another risque reference to Punky Meadows. This is far less publicised and only hard-core Zappa fans would have known by hearing this original, then the hastily re-edited version that, in Zappa terms, is quite common. Clearly Warner were determined to remove all audio references to the Angel guitarist on the revamped version. One last detail for Frank Zappa completists (like myself) – the second UK censored issued album, for a brief time, still included the ‘original’ cover that included the ‘Punky’ references and lyrics. This particular cover was now printed by Garrod & Lofthouse. The very first printed UK covers were uncredited as seen in my close-up picture of the rear imprint. So not all ‘Punky’ covers are the same, and it appears only the originals included the non-credited imprint making them considerably rarer. Being a Zappa fan since the age of 12, and buying just about ever new release as close to issue day as possible, I know the rarity of this album as a genuine first issue. I visited my nearest record shop in Colchester with a couple of days of this album release, just to be sold it had been ‘delayed’, and no new date was available. Making the journey home disappointed, it was only after some time I found out the real reason why this album was not on the shelves. Anyone lucky enough to get one of these on the day of release, must have been there almost at opening time to grab the tiny few that were made briefly available before withdrawal.

Original Year of Release: 1977

Matrix Nos: K-69204 A-1, K-69204 B-1, K-69204 C-1 and K-69204 D-1 (all scripted). All four run out grooves have ‘ALLEN’ etched on them.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Without doubt this is one of Zappa’s rarest albums on vinyl, and arguably, THE rarest. This is the first, and only, briefly UK issued version of this double set that includes the controversial track ‘Punky’s Whips’. This was withdrawn almost immediately and is very elusive. Warner Bros got very worried about this song in case the man (Mr Punky Meadows of the US glam-rock band Angel, a long blonde-headed lead guitar player) sued Zappa for the sexual lyrics, suggesting Punky was gay. It was later said he was unoffended by the song and actually thought it all very amusing. Terry Bozio, the ‘cute little’ drummer in this Zappa band, falls in love with a picture of Punky and tells of his desires of what he would like to do with him - it’s all very bizarre and typical Frank humour. This album exists in three versions: this being the first cut that includes ‘Punky’s Whips’ on the cover, label and the record plays the song. The second version has the track on the cover but not on the label and does NOT play the song. The already printed second G&L covers were used up to save money, but clearly the written lyrics were strangely not deemed a worry compared with the vocal version. The third, and most common issue omits the track everywhere. This ultimate withdrawn first pressing also includes the uncensored version of ‘Titties and Beer’ that opens the album. It has an extra line with reference to a picture of Meadows to be used for ‘self-pleasure’ (a cleaned up version here). This album as an original is far rarer than even the Price Guides suggest, it’s listed as triple the value of the other two, does that mean every 300 copies of this record found, 100 of them will be the original with complete track listing? - I think not, my regulars will know I am a huge Zappa fan and collector, I have seen this album very few times. Those who got a ‘Punky’ copy must have been incredibly fast or just lucky, as this was pulled from sale almost immediately. New York is a classic live Zappa set, it covers all aspects of his works and most are brand new songs. Three live favourites are featured - ‘Punky’s Whip’s’ yes (but only a very few originals), also ‘Titties and Beer’ (here uncut) and ‘The Illinois Enema Bandit’. ‘Titties’ tells of Franks deal with the devil (played by Bozio again) to get back his girl and beer, who have been swallowed by that ‘cute little drummer’ [bemasked and playing the devil]. ‘The Illinois Enema Bandit’ is a bizarre true story about Michael Kenyon, an armed robber who administered enema’s to three woman victims while the robberies were taking place. Other than the satire, this stunning double set features a full size jazz workout, not dissimilar to The Grand Wazoo in the shape of ‘The Purple Lagoon’ (that occupies all of side four), and some amazingly complex instrumentals including both versions of the ‘Black Page’. His first ever single with the Mothers of Invention is also included (‘Big Leg Emma’). This is virtuoso territory and features a stunning backing band including Ruth Underwood on percussion. Both records in superb shape too and appearing and sounding hardly played. The cover, as per most, has ring wear and is immensely hard to find without it – even my own copy has some. A wonderful and rare original for Zappaphiles to enjoy, these come along very infrequently, I would be sure the withdrawn copies were melted down and only a small number were sold fast enough to beat the withdrawal.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(–): an unlaminated gatefold format witih matt, smooth surfaces. It includes all references to Punky’s Whips with lyrics printed (please see my close-up pictures). Also this has the correct uncredited imprint on the back, the second printing includes the Garrod & Lofthouse credit. The original unlined inners are included.

Cover Front: This is simply one of those covers that rarely escapes rubbing and ring wear. The front has only gentle traces, and in real terms for this one, very little wear. There is a small round sticker residue mark near the top right which is only quite mild and light with no actual damage to the cover’s surface. The lack of grubbiness and creasing are pluses.

Cover Back: The back has more moderate ring wear seen at the top and bottom, I have hardly seen any originals without some, including my own copy. Other rubbing or marks are minimal, small and light.

Cover Gatefold Inner: A little gentle set-off on the paler right side. Like the back, this includes the Punky reference with full lyrics.

Top Edges: A couple or three tiny rubs. Both are straight and flush.

Bottom Edges: Reasonably light patchy rubbing, more near the corner ends.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean and mostly sharp with any thickening or burring minimal, even as seen viewed end-on. Records enter on these right edges that are guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: Near perfect: solid, straight with barely any hint of compression and minimal tilt. Folded square, so the edges meet up closely and parallel, and a bonus this has not faded as it has a tendency to do with any light exposure. Tiny rubs to the very ends only, all text and graphic intact and strong.

Corners: Mainly light tip rubs, most on the bottom right, but still only small. Very fine and mostly excellent shape retained with no knocks or dinks.

Cover Summary: Overall, a solid and still quite attractive example of this rare cover. Even though the back as the usual rim rubbing, it is far less than some I have seen (on any version). It should please many collectors, these are not seen often as a genuine first printing.

The Inner Sleeves: EXCELLENT: one is almost as made. The other has a crease. Two plain white solid unlined inners that are identical in design. Clean, fresh with no edge splits or repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): or better. All four sides are clean, mostly with fine shine – one has gentle inner sleeve dulling seen under light – totally harmless, and quite solidly pressed. The owner had put these into replacement polylined inners and clearly, these records had hardly been removed since. Any surface marks are minimal, ultra fine and faint, there are no stylus scratches and all four sides play impressively clean with barely no issues at all. Possibly Zappa’s rarest original album in excellent condition, these should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: Both records play up to their high visual grading with very little to fault. Offering strong, totally distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear with no tracking issues*. Superbly recorded and nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading. Great detail and fantastic production - Zappa live albums were always special, mostly all new material and strong sound and performances. Legendary tracks within his vast catalogue including (for a nice change on vinyl), ‘Punky’s Whips’ and the uncensored full version of ‘Titties and Beer’. Available copies of this are rare and finding the two records cleaner and lesser-played will be very difficult, even unlikely – one for the serious fan, these are getting ever more challenging to find. A plain is fact is, when fans get to own one of these, they seldom put them back on the open market, and let’s be clear, if I did not own a similar copy myself, this would be going nowhere. Okay, a little cover wear, but few ever avoid it. My highest possible recommendation is mandatory for a classic Zappa double set, that’s actually COMPLETE.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
