Frank Zappa's liner notes for Freak Out! name-checked an enormous breadth of musical and intellectual influences, and he seemingly attempts to cover them all on the second Mothers of Invention album, Absolutely Free.
Leaping from style to style without warning, the album has a freewheeling, almost schizophrenic quality, encompassing everything from complex mutations of "Louie, Louie" to jazz improvisations and quotes from Stravinsky's Petrushka.
It's made possible not only by expanded instrumentation, but also Zappa's experiments with tape manipulation and abrupt editing, culminating in an orchestrated mini-rock opera ("Brown Shoes Don't Make It") whose musical style shifts every few lines, often in accordance with the lyrical content.
In general, the lyrics here are more given over to absurdity and non sequiturs, with the sense that they're often part of some private framework of satirical symbols.
But elsewhere, Zappa's satire also grows more explicitly social, ranting against commercial consumer culture and related themes of artificiality and conformity.
By turns hilarious, inscrutable, and virtuosically complex, Absolutely Free is more difficult to make sense of than Freak Out!, but even if it isn't quite fully realised, Absolutely Free is still a fabulously inventive record, bursting at the seams with ideas.

LABELS: The labels are clean and unmarked with not that many spindle traces and no evident wear to the spindle hole - EXCELLENT
VINYL Visual: Both surfaces retain a glossy sheen. There are numerous general light hairlines and marks - but no feel-able scratches - VERY GOOD
VINYL Audio: Sounds sensational and plays very well with warm and vibrant audio reproduction and an impressive crystal clear, loud and bright MONO cut. On playback at a loud volume (which is how I always listen to my LPs prior to listing, and it's always an immense pleasure to return to this wonderful LP) there are no scratches, no sticks or jumps, just some general background clicks and pops - only a few of which rise above background level - but saying that it still sounds great and all frequencies are bright and clear and there is no discernible groove-wear and no distortion. Critically graded VERY GOOD+ for audio and even though a far from perfect copy it is still one of the best I have come across recently (and therefore the only one in a long while I have considered worthy of offering for sale) and this is an incredibly hard album to find in it's original MONO format
SLEEVE: The G&L front laminated flipback cover is critically graded a VERY GOOD+++ with some grubby marking to the unlaminated back. It is however, good and solid with no structural damage, the flipback sections are complete and the laminated front has a very nice deep glossy sheen. There is also very, very little wear to the edges or spine - where all text is clear and bold
