Label Conditions: Both labels are in superb conditions. Incredibly fresh, clean and attractive with hardly a spindle trace to be seen. A record to match my own personal copy with sound to match.

Weight of this Record: 140 grams. Like pressing quality, this album also varies considerably in weight. This being one of the heavier ones I have had for some time. I have had copies on this first issue label much lighter than this, and very few heavier.

Original Year of Release: 1970

Rarity: The original first pressing on the tri-coloured Reprise label is scarce. It proved to be the final Zappa album issued on this label and was quite a late one on this format. Both ‘Chunga’s Revenge’ and ‘Weasel’s Ripped My Flesh’ albums both appeared in 1970 with RSLP prefixes, but they went immediately to the new tan format design. Better pressed examples are hard to find and also this album is very intolerant of heavy-tracking on basic record players from the past. Lots of electric violin and complex instrumentals mean more difficult tracking and so many are seen scratched and the sound ruined with groove wear and damage causing clipping and distortion. This record appears hardly played and plays superbly with very little unwanted. Lastly, the cover: this always wears badly, especially the back that is often rife with deep penetrating ringwear and rarely seen with little. Most wear on this one is seen on the top and bottom edges, the main areas, including the spine, are still fine and attractive.

These are all uncredited on the UK cover that never included the insert sheet the American copies initially had.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Some of Zappa’s finest instrumentals are ‘Sandwiched’ inbetween two slices of doo-wop trivia: ‘WPLJ’ (wine, port and lemon juice, and ‘Valerie’. ‘Igor’s Boogie’ was written for Stravinsky, while ‘Holiday in Berlin’ was for the militant German students who had invaded the stage in October 1968, demanding that Zappa make an anti-capitalist statement (Zappa later said their leaders wanted him to tell the audience to burn down a nearby American forces base). ‘Aybe Sea’ was a tinkling piano piece that again relied on Ian Underwood’s sensitive touch. The centrepiece of this wonderful album is ‘The Little House I Used to Live In’, which occupies most of side two. It’s similar in structure to the Hot Rats album, with blistering solos from Sugarcane Harris’s electric violin - an awesome electric storm - and the finale is an organ solo frenzy by Frank himself. After ‘Little House’ there is a short dialogue between Zappa and a member of the audience, this always intrigues me as you cannot really here clearly what the heckler is saying, but Frank’s lines are: “Everyone here is wearing a uniform, don’t kid yourself’’ and “You will hurt your throat, stop it’’ - the heckler shuts up. This copy includes a first issue record that appears very little played and offers mostly superb sound with probably the least unwanted I have heard since I played my own copy. The cover has wear on the top and bottom edges as mentioned, but the main areas still look nice – and this is one of the most wear-prone in his catalogue.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(–): and in terms of this one, a nice looking example. An unlaminated, gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse and has the original ‘Patents Pending’ text. Includes the polylined inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Very colourful and bizarrely strange, this retains rich colour with no fading with barely any creasing or wear. A little corner tip rubbing, barely any creasing or rubbing, and no sticker tears of which this is very intolerant. Really impressive and seldom seen better.

Cover Back: Impossibly difficult, most often seen with deep cutting ringwear and rubbing. This has avoided such issues, any slight rubbing that comes into view is mainly on the bottom edge and corner tips. Any marks or blemishes few and very small, the lack of creasing, like the lack of ugly heavy ringwear, being another plus.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Minor rub traces near the very edges and corner tips, little else to fault.

Top Edges: Moderate, but quite patchy rubbing, both straight and flush.

Bottom Edges: Moderate and patchy rubbing on the front edge, more moderate to heavy on the back. This as seen viewed end-on.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, still quite sharp with little wear. Any thickening or burring quite mild seen viewed end-on. Record enters on the back edge, both guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: Solid, thicker than later examples and straight with minimal compression. A little small and light clipping to text here-and-there, but as seen, still mostly present and solid, still very easy to read. Again, many of these have text badly eroded and lost. Note also, this is the correct RSLP original.

Corners: The spine pair area still neat with little wear. The right tips have moderate rubbing. Fine to very fine shape retained with no bashes and minimal evidence of dinking.

Cover Summary: A difficult unlaminated cover that seldom wears well, the ringwear caused by heavier original records, this has largely avoided that making it quite exceptional. With most of the wear on the bottom back edge, and the main areas with few issues, this is a nice example to please many collectors. But not for the highly discerning. Note: the UK versions of this album never included any insert.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: a plain white, polylined inner that has only gently aged. Two crisp undamaged window circles with the lining still clear and barely even crinkled. A little crinkle but minimal creasing, all edges unsplit with no repairs. This is UK patented with ‘Foreign Patents Pending’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: and side one especially worth of at least an extra (+). A very impressive original that is very clean with lovely shine and very solidly pressed. A hardly played little for sure with any surface traces fine and faint as seen under bright angled light. A few gentle minor hairlines on side two do nothing. One near microscopic pressing spot on one has a couple of gentle clicks, but little else. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This very first pressed example plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. A difficult album at times with some very quiet passages and some dynamic loud ones as well. It offers strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear with no tracking issues*. Audio quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal, this one of the best-pressed copies I have had to offer for ages. This has massive highs and lows in frequency range: from the lower bass notes of the organ finale to Harris’s screeching electric violin, always a very difficult instrument to track and maintain. This plays with no clipping or break-up at all, all is very sharp and focused throughout. Same goes for the solo piano parts, these again are very crisp. This album is predominately instrumental and little played, of that, I have no doubt – no damaging old stylus have stripped or worn these complex grooves. Few originals will match, let alone outperform this quality copy I feel sure. Indeed this would be going nowhere if I not had a copy of this quality myself, again it took an age to find that. The quiet and delicate piano intro to side two also plays very well with litte unwanted. I have heard so many that have loud crackle and even distortion. A couple of light clicks from a microscopic pressing spot apart, nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, I have all too rarely heard the gentle piano intro on side two play this quiet, this is very difficult indeed as fans will know. This record will prove very difficult to find better and merits strong recommendation.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
