Soul-jazz vibraphonist Freddie McCoy was never a hit with the critics, spending most of his time laying down coolly funky grooves and covering contemporary R&B and pop tunes (or doing original material in a similarly accessible vein). However, his albums later became underground collector's items among acid jazz and rare-groove enthusiasts. McCoy started out with Johnny "Hammond" Smith in 1961, then signed with Prestige and cut his first album, Lonely Avenue, in 1963. Over the next five years, McCoy cut seven albums for the label, highlighted by 1965's Spider Man, 1967's Beans and Greens, and 1968's Listen Here. His groups usually featured pianist/organist Joanne Brackeen, in some of her first work after temporarily retiring to raise her family. McCoy later recorded for the small Buddah subsidiary Cobblestone, debuting with Gimme Some!, a circa-1971 jazz-funk session featuring some trippy electric piano work. However, the label was short-lived, and McCoy disappeared from jazz after its demise.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)            The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           The record has a ►Rudy Van Gelder name, or  his initials (RVG) stamped or hand-etched in the trail-off vinyl (dead wax). On SOME  Jazz labels (Blue Note, Savoy, Regent, Prestige, Impulse, Verve…) this stamp signifies highly professional masterings either done by - or  personally authorized by - the legendary engineer himself.

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD+++.

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.  (nothing significant)

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine   (nothing significant)

-         Minor shelf wear noted on the top seam (nothing significant)

-         Cover has a minor wrinkle (crease) in the cardboard base on the back panel  (a minor cover construction flaw)
