Description

Scarce vintage jazz LP featuring FREDDIE REDD on the BLUE NOTE label, from approximately 1960.    Title is “Shades of Redd,” catalog number is BLP 4045.

Label address is “Blue Note Records Inc * 47 West 63rd * NYC” on both sides, thick vinyl, deep groove.  Trailoff vinyl has machine stamped “RVG” and ear symbol.  Jacket reverse has “Blue Note Records Inc., 43 West 61st St., New York 23” address at bottom.

Outstanding lineup consisting of :  JACKIE McLEAN – alto sax, TINA BROOKS – tenor sax, FREDDIE REDD – piano, PAUL CHAMBERS – bass, and LOUIS HAYES – drums.

Jacket is in excellent condition with beautiful graphics, no writing or splits, a bit of very slight wear on reverse but no stains or problems, a very small corner of the white slick is cut at a diagonal at bottom left exposing cardboard (see scan), not a serious problem, overall a very fine jacket.

The vinyl appears to have been played a small number of times, as it retains nearly all of its original gloss and plays with outstanding fidelity.

Side 2 has several light hairlines that are not audible, and while there may be a couple very soft tics on the side, overall it plays beautifully.

Side 1 has several scratches that are visually a bit scary, but for the most part are not audible and again the side plays cleanly with the exception of a few very soft tics.   If you saw this record in a store, you might shy away from purchasing it because the scratches on Side 1 might scare you, but if you took it home and listened, I think you would be very pleased with the purchase.  It is a fine playing copy.  As always, my records are fully guaranteed.  If not happy, simply return in same condition for a full refund.

Tracks are as follows:  Side 1:  “Thespian” (Redd), “Blues-Blues-Blues” (Redd), and “Shadows” (Redd).  Side 2: “Melanie” (Redd), “Swift” (Redd), and “Just a Ballad for My Baby” (Redd).

In response to a question about whether the scratches are "feel-able" I re-checked the album. There is one scratch that is "feel-able" in one small area at the beginning of Side 2, Track 3. It produces a soft but noticeable tic for about 9 turns at the beginning of the tune, after which is not audible. There is some very soft surface noise on that track for about one-third of the tune. That is the only place on the album where there is any problem. Overall it remains a very enjoyable album for listening. I realize there are collectors who may respectfully disagree and that describing records is an imperfect science, and that is why I offer a full-return guarantee with every record I sell.
