Freddy Fender started out in Latin music as the 'Be Bop Kid' singing Spanish language versions of current hit singles of the late '50s like "That'll Be The Day," "Don't Be Cruel" an "Singing The Blues." In time, he changed his name from Baldemar Huerta, to Freddy Fender and by 1959 was signed with Imperial Records and recording the first version of his future hit "Wasted Days, And Wasted Nights."
In the mid '70s he was all over the country charts with songs such as "Before The Next Teardrop Falls," "Secret Love," "Living It Down" and "The Rains Came." He continued as a hit maker all the way thru the end of the decade.
Now where does this single fit in ? It's from August of 1956 and he's covering one of the biggest R&R hits of the day: "Don't Be Cruel" by Elvis Presley. On this single, sung entirely in Spanish – it's rendered as "No Seas Cruel." On the flip you get one of his original songs – "Ay Amor." Both are in spanish – and he's credited here under his real name – Baldemar Huerta.
