Album produced by Free and John Kelly. Engineered by Roy Thomas Baker. Recorded at Trident and Island Studios January – March 1970.
Paul Rodgers – vocals; Paul Kossoff – guitar; Andy Fraser – bass; Simon Kirke – drums
“Fire and Water” was Free’s third studio album was a huge commercial success, reaching number 2 in the UK charts and number 17 in the US charts. “Fire and Water” is widely regarded as Free’s seminal album, largely due to the fact that it features the hit single “All Right Now”. An outstanding album featuring other classic Free tracks including “Oh I Wept”, “Heavy Load, “Mr. Big” and of course the title track, “Fire and Water”.
“All Right Now” was released in late May 1970 and within a month had sold in excess of one million copies. At the time it was Island’s fastest selling single in its history and they were hard pressed to keep up with demand. On the back of the enormous success of the hit single there was pressure to release the LP and this led to two different versions of the title track being pressed. The original pink island pressings contain the rare original version of “Fire and Water”, where Kossoff’s solo has a single guitar piece followed by another separate section. On all subsequent Islands pressings released in the UK from August 1970 onwards a remixed version appears with Kossoff’s two guitar parts layered on top of each other.
The “Fire and Water” album was engineered by a talented young producer, Roy Thomas Baker. Baker subsequently went on to work with Queen and produce one of the biggest selling singles of all time, “Bohemian Rhapsody”, as well as collaborating with Queen on many other of their early recordings.
