Label Conditions: Both look fantastic: ultra clean, fresh and attractive with hardly a spindle traces to be seen. This an immaculate copy and without doubt hardly even played.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Rarity: Rare in this condition, make no mistake. Very few of the deeply pinched spine originals will even get close.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Seventh and final album for this great British blues-rock band. Like the previous album Free at Last a little under-rated title in their great catalogue but their trademark quality rarely lets up. It includes their classic and popular single ‘Wishing Well’ and the beautiful ‘Come Together in the Morning’. Paul Kossoff plays guitar on five tracks but is not credited now as a band member as such on the cover. This is a lovely record that looks little played, it includes the illustrated inner in superb condition. The cover, a typical unlaminated Island format, being predominately white, is seldom seen anything like clean. This is a beauty and includes the most pronounced manufacture’s nipped spine ends which look amazing, these are undamaged and very sharp (please see close up picture of this detail). Viewed from the front, the most lovely ‘flats’ show and this is so rare to find so neat. This super-fine copy will please even discerning Free collectors, only one in many will be found so well preserved and little played. This final album went out with a bang rather than a whimper and thus it should never be under-rated.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High.

Cover Grade and Format: Mint(-) and few can be graded this highly. A single unlaminated format with matt smooth surfaces, it has the deeply pinched spine ends. Printed and made in England by Robor and including the illustrated lyric inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Pure class gorgeous – close to factory fresh and looking magnificent. Only a small percentage ever retain such whiteness and a genuine freshness and this too from a cover now 40 years old. Any grubbiness or creasing or tiny and faint with two fantastic flats for the spine ends (both sides). Any tiny marks or blemishes are miniscule as are handling traces, this front is as near ‘reference’ standard as they get.

Cover Back: Again in superb condition and no ring wear. I am even struggling to find a single hairline edge crease. An amzingly preserved example that is so hard to find both like this. Clearly this has never been stored within a smoking environment.

Top & Bottom Edges: Both as as made, the lack of grubbiness unusual and both dead straight.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Immaculate: ultra clean, razor sharp with no wear, burring or thickening and guaranteed untrimmed. Record entered on this right edge.

Spine and Text: Again magnificent: the deeply pinched spine ends are gorgeous – this the part that makes the difference between average and exceptional – and these ARE exceptional. Later examples were routinely square, this pair are deeply tapered as seen in my close-up pictures. Solid, straight and quite thick, the odd hint of compression is being quite critical. All text is perfect and unworn and retaining supreme whiteness.

Corners: All four corners are practically Mint and so few will even get close. Crisp with incredible sharpness without even a tip crease or even a hint of.

Cover Summary: This is of near reference standard and one for the cover connoisseur. This being even more noteworthy as this is so prone to all forms of wear and ageing. This is very close to as made with any handling traces minuscule. This beautiful item should please most-all collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: MINT(-): and arguably undergraded as such. This is made with very thin paper and unlined. Few survive devoid of edge splits, tears and creasing. This is, like the cover, immaculate and again is little short of as made with any blemishes tiny, few and faint. No creasing, edge splits and only the lighest rim impression that is nigh-on impossible to avoid. Simply fantastic and this puts the icing on the cake for this difficult album.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): an album that is not always blessed with a pristine pressing – the date of issue may give clues. I have heard several ‘cracklers’ for this title and even clean copies don’t always offer guaranteed clean sound – this one looks and sounds lovely with little unwanted at all. A super visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface marks few, light and faint as seen under bright angled light. There are NO penetrating scratches on this record and with any traces being merely minor friction surface hairlines. Visually a super record that should please most collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This impressive copy plays up to it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. The gentle trace between the odd song or two but this almost nit-picking on a record this age. In terms of pressing quality, this is one of the cleanest I have heard for some time, this too being played on very sensitive equipment which I always feel important to mention. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly indeed and has been incredibly well stored and carefully handled within a non-smoking environment. I doubt if record, inner or cover have seen light-of-day for decades and nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove immensely difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended. Such examples come along all too rarely these days.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
