Description
Here for auction is a lovely example of the brilliant blues/rock album by FREE titled “TONS OF SOBS”, Catalogue Number ILPS 9089. This is an ORIGINAL 1970 UK STEREO PRESSING on the PINK ISLAND RECORD LABEL with the earliest A2/B2 Matrix Numbers and rough textured Pink 'i' labels. Complete with a superb 1st issue E. J. Day gatefold sleeve.
The matt finish gatefold sleeve, printed and made in England by Ernest J. Day & Co. Ltd., is in EX condition (strictly graded) with only very light wear. The front and back covers and gatefold spread are unmarked. The spine is square and solid with perfect text. You can see from the photos that this is a very well preserved sleeve which should please most collectors.
The top quality Island record is solidly pressed and sits flat and true on the turntable.
The Matrix Numbers are:
Side One – ILPS + 9089 + A2
Side Two – ILPS + 9089 + B2
I would grade both sides visually as being in VG+ condition as there are some light sleeve removal type surface marks evident under bright light. These are purely superficial and do not cause any audio problems (no clicks). The beautiful textured pink ‘i’ Island labels are unmarked apart from a few spindle traces near the centres and a liquid paper mark on the ‘i’ of the Side Two label (which is only noticeable under close inspection). There is barely any wear around the spindle hole.
PLAYGRADE ASSESSMENT:
This is a particularly detailed and vibrant stereo pressing with excellent sound quality. The record plays perfectly. All frequencies are crystal clear and there is no discernable deterioration in sound quality. There are no pops or loud clicks and barely any unwanted noise at all (just occasional very light surface sound with is never intrusive and only mentioned for complete accuracy). A significantly better playing copy of this wonderful album may be very difficult to find.
Complete with the correct white poly-lined inner sleeve which is in very good condition. This has no splits, just a few creases and a small tear by one centre cut-out.
GRADINGS
The records that I offer for sale have been critically play-graded, at loud volume, on a Rega Planar 3 turntable fitted with an Elys 2 cartridge. I will only sell records that play to a high standard. My gradings are strict and in accordance with the following descriptions:
· MINT- Record is superb, almost like new, with just a few sleeve removal type surface marks and no deterioration in sound quality. Sleeve is near perfect in all respects.
· EX Record is a top quality example, with just a few very light surface marks which do not sound, and barely any discernable deterioration in sound quality. Sleeve has slight wear and/or creasing.
· VG Record has some visual surface marks, but still plays to a high standard without any major deterioration in sound quality – just a few clicks or light surface sound in places. Sleeve has normal wear and tear without any major defects. Still a very presentable sleeve.
PACKAGING & POSTAGE
Records are sent out in new “Wrapro” record mailers. These are rectangular and strong, providing excellent protection to the edges and corners. Records are removed from both inner and outer sleeves in order to prevent seam-splits in transit.
