Spirit Sensitive marked a shift for Chico Freeman, moving from free jazz towards a more introspective exploration of standards and ballads. Freeman's tenor saxophone shines with a warm, full-bodied tone, highlighted by his sensitive interpretations. The album is a dialogue between Freeman and bassist Cecil McBee, whose powerful bass takes a prominent role. John Hicks provides rich piano textures, while Billy Hart and Famoudou Don Moye offer subtle percussion that complements the minimalist aesthetic. Opening with 'Autumn in New York', the record sets a contemplative mood. Horace Silver's 'Peace' is a standout, with Freeman's graceful phrasing and McBee's resonant bass providing a meditative soundscape. Thad Jones' 'A Child Is Born' offers a tender, melodic moment, while 'It Never Entered My Mind' and 'Close to You Alone' continue the reflective journey.
