Formerly known as Paper Sun and Freeport Express. "Paper Sun was formed in early '68 or so. Although not sure of the original lineup, in February 1969 the members included Eric Janson (guitar and vocals), Kevin Raleigh (keyboards and vocals), Craig Holt (bass), and Bill Stallings (drums). With this lineup they recorded some songs at Landen for the ill-fated Abbey Group deal. After Chess pulled the plug on the national distribution, a very limited local pressing of two songs -- 'Sweetest Thing On My Mind' (written by Phil Okulovich using his 'Jason Richards' pen name) and 'Here Comes Tomorrow,' written by Raleigh -- was done on the Abbey label. Paper Sun, befitting the Traffic-inspired moniker, played a 'progressive' style of late '60s rock sounds, and were popular at teen dances, such as the Hullabaloo clubs, around the area. At some time, the personnel changed where Janson was gone and two guitarists were added -- Dennis Stredney and Roger Lewis. Lewis had been in the Poppy but had to quit due to an injury sustained in a band van accident. Either prior to or with this lineup, they changed their name to Freeport. Freeport was a huge band in the NE Ohio area in 1970 -- playing constantly in Cleveland and the Youngstown areas. They recorded an LP in Miami for Mainstream records, which included several originals and the Eric Carmen song 'I Need Your Lovin'.' An additional 45 was also released with two songs not on the LP. The band also used the name Freeport Express but it's not clear if that was a name change. The band continued to play into 1971 or 1972." --Buckeye Beat.

I share the sentiments that it is a very good, very solid, and very consistent album. The sounds are semi-commercially oriented hard rock, featuring vocal harmony and great guitar work. The fact that it was released on a label that is highly collectible among psych circles may have hampered it somewhat, as the album is really not psychedelic. Big fans of that genre are typically the only ones to even know about the album, and often trash it as disappointing. Their loss! It will appeal to most fans of harder rock, especially those that love the added bonus of great early 70's period flavor. The album was released in Dec. 1970, and the band hailed from Cleveland, OH

THE WHITE LABEL PROMO, RADIO STATION-, AUDITION OR DEMONSTRATION COPIES AND RELEASES (such as the one we have here) were often distributed to the radio stations before the record was released to the public, sometimes as much as four months ahead. These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals": the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title; a PROTOTYPE and the earliest known official pressing of the record.

·      THE RECORD

 (IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)         WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  (WEAK) NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)         The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)         White Promo Label version of this title is much rarer that a regular, commercially released, version of this title. We estimate that stock copies of this album outnumber promo copies by a ratio of at least 30:1.

(d)         Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD+(+)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-       Cover has some ring wear.  On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 4  (front side) and 5 (back side).

-       Cover has a small filing sticker taped to the spine, which may be possible to remove with a little effort (we did not attempt to)

-       Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging   (nothing significant)

-       The cover has a few tiny scratch marks on the back side.

-       Visible shelf wear noted on the seams

-       Cover has one corner slightly worn / dinged (nothing significant)

-       Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine  (nothing significant)
