Very obscure Music Machine one-off single put out in 1968 under the name the Friendly Torpedos – actually the work of Sean Bonniwell and Paul Buff, who worked at the Original Sound studios and was namechecked earlier on Frank Zappa’s Freak Out album. Unlike the Music Machine, the Torpedos’ music was loose, ragged, somewhat demented rural psych rock kinda like a mix of Country Joe and Paul Revere and the Raiders. Flipside “So Long Ago” is a completely twisted bit of backporch kiddie pop that sounds like Sean might be telling his own story, especially when he sings “There were five of us together and we tried to look the same. We wore black synthetic leather so we used that as a name.” Then again, he also sings “I got myself a manager for the ten percent he took. He told me not to take a bath so I smelled just like I looked.” Strange dude, that Sean Bonniwell. Just listen to his solo album one day.
