Only distributed among friends and a rare example of self-built instruments and sound sculptures from New Zealand. "Pacific 3,2,1 Zero" is a work of protest against nuclear testing and waste dumping in Oceania in the South Pacific. Between 1946 and 1992, the UK, USA and France detonated over 200 nuclear devices in the Pacific, displacing indigenous people from their homelands and deliberately exposing others to fallout. In 1981, From Scratch was invited to perform at the 12th Paris Biennale. The opportunity was too good to miss for a direct protest about French nuclear testing in Eastern Polynesia and the work "Pacific 3,2,1 Zero" resulted. The idea of isolated islands of humanity connected by common waters whose currents innocently carry nuclear contamination, provided an image for the musical structure of the work. Music/sound performance, rhythmic invention and experimental instruments have been a feature of From Scratch since the 1972 manifesto VOM. This was the original probe-and-hatch plan devised by Phil Dadson for the Auckland Scratch group as an alternative to the mainly improvised activities of Scratch Orchestra (New Zealand), an off-shoot of Cornelius Cardew's foundation group for a scratch orchestra which he was involved with in London during the late 60s. The rhythm stress implicit to VOM prompted a drift from large scale pieces to smaller scale tightly-structured rhythm works and to the formation of the first From Scratch group in 1974. The politics of From Scratch are reinforced by it's Pacific context. Egalitarian and co-operative ideals are embodied in the music and the performance with players sharing equal and similar roles. From Scratch instruments are sound and sign, signals to ear and eye. From the outset instrument invention has been central to the group's development, and over the years has graduated from assemblages of found objects to custom designed pieces. The tonal vocabulary has evolved from random-pitched to finely-tuned, just, harmonic and micro'. Central to this development have been the tuned percussion stations, rack-supported, four-tier combinations of PVC pipes, tuned-tongue bells, roto-tom drums, and tuned tongue bamboos, along with some quirky and original methods of playing. First four and later three of these stations, along with various other original struck and spun acoustic instruments, made up the From Scratch sound that gained it international recognition during the 1980s and '90s. 2000 and the group has a fresh sound and new look with Zitherum long stringed instruments (drummed and bowed), the metal pronged Nundrum, the stroked RodBaschet, Gong tree, Foley-trays, WaterCooler–Drumkit, Water-bells & kitchen sink. . . and more recently the Gloopdrum family, spring-gongs, ostifans . . & the list goes on. ****** Top mint conditions! ****** Please wait to receive my invoice before sending the payment after the auction ends.
